Summary The subject of the book is the role of violence and honour in the everyday life of rural residents in the modern era. Particular emphasis has been placed on understanding the relationship between violence and honour, their impact on building interpersonal relations and functioning of the local community. The selected area includes the villages of the Mierzeja Wiślana (Vistula Spit) and the Szkarpawa river area belonging to the City of Gdańsk. The court books of the Vistula Spitand the Szkarpawa river, stored in the State Archives in Gdańsk for the years 1578-1626 are the basic source of information. The book was divided into two parts. The first part discusses different types of violence and their relationship with honour. In the first chapter, verbal aggression was analysed, and especially the insult- the most frequent form of violence in the examined sources. The key problem here is to understand the role of verbal expression in the examined cultural circle and its relation to the concept of honour. A separate subchapter presents the problem of accusations of witchcraft. The second chapter was devoted to physical violence. In order to interpret this phenomenon, it was necessary to reflect on the concept of bodily integrity and the meaning of individual parts of the body in the examined cultural circle. A question was also asked about the role of gestures in the act of violence and a scheme of a typical fight was presented. The subject of the third chapter is sexual violence sexual harassment and rape. The emphasis here is put on showing the mechanism of sexual
abuse, its effects, the strategies of the perpetrators and victims, and the reactions of those around them. The analysis has shown that sexual violence is closely linked to the concept of honour. The second part of the book aims to show the phenomenon of violence and honour in interpersonal relations of different nature. In chapter four, the subject of analysis is violence in family relations: between spouses, parents and children, siblings. The mechanism of violence was closely linked to the patriarchal system. Domestic violence in the modern society was legally and socially accepted. However, the book also shows another face of the family in the context of violence - when the family sympathised in external conflicts and fought together for their honour. The last chapter
448 SUMMARY deals with violence and honour in the context of different social relations in the countryside. Ihe first subchapter concerns relations between employers and employees (servants). Beating up subordinates was a legally and socially accepted practice, and financial dependence on the hosts further worsened the situation of the victims. On the other hand, employees also used violence against their superiors, although it sometimes took latent forms. The subject of second subsection is violence in relations between parishioners and pastors as well as teachers. The key issue here was the confessional policy of the authorities, which exacerbated conflicts at the local level. In turn, relations between subordinates and officials were analysed in the third subsection. Violence had an important function in regulating power relations. As honour was the basic criterion for performing all public functions, the possibility of taking it away was the bargaining chip of the subordinate population. Violence, including assaults on honour, also played an important role in neighbourly relations ֊ this is presented in subsection four. Together with a discussion of typical conflict situations, the book raises issues of cooperation and solidarity between rural residents and the mechanisms for regulating internal relations within the community. The last subchapter introduces the analysis of subsequent actors - animals. Playing an extremely important role in the lives of rural residents, they also took part in their conflicts. It is important to point out that they also became victims of
violence, which was usually to be directed against their owners (indirect violence). The studied rural community belonged to the so-called cultures of honour, where an individuals honour is a determining factor of ones identity, a membership of a group, access to the most important resources, a possibility of performing public functions and running a business. Honour was an acquired value through the adherence of cultural norms specific to the community. Whether an individual is honourable was decided by others giving opinions about them. At the same time, honour was an impermanent value - one could lose it at any time. The result of the loss of honour was the loss of group membership, loss of social position, security, social and professional contacts, as well as economic exclusion. The analysis of numerous court cases has shown that the withdrawal of honour has always been the result of violence. Usually it was verbal aggression in the form of libel, slander or gossip, but physical violence could also disgrace the opponent. The results of the presented analysis indicate the need to move away from the stereotypical perception of violence as an action aimed primarily at causing physical suffering to the victim. It turns out that in the studied community, the most frequent aim of the perpetrator
SUMMARY 449 of violence was to hurt the opponent’s honour, and thus to cause social, financial and psychological harm. This then allows us to understand why particular forms of violence were used more often than others, why they were the basis for legal proceedings, what the motives of the perpetrators were and, finally, what the consequences were. Power, physical, financial and social advantage could increase the likelihood of becoming a perpetrator of violence. However, many examples show the opposite ֊ when violence was used against people who were physically stronger, in a better legal situation, with a higher social status and in power. The book shows that violence has often been a way of improving the situation of marginalised groups, who did not have access to official, legal means to defend their interests. This confirms the need to move away from the stereotypical perception of violence as an action inflicted by individuals or groups dominating their subordinates. The book proves that violence should not be seen as an uncontrolled outbreak of negative emotions, but as an individual and group strategy. The book also breaks the classic perception of violence as a factor destabilising social life. In the studied rural community, the individual perpetrator often committed violence not for particular purposes, but in defence of his community. Rural residents who were interdependent from one another cared about the prosperity, security and identity of the entire community, because their own well-being depended on it. Through violence and the taking away of honour, those
who threatened solidarity and common security were excluded from the community. In this way, violence could bring numerous benefits to the community.

Summary The subject of the book is the role of violence and honour in the everyday life of rural residents in the modern era. Particular emphasis has been placed on understanding the relationship between violence and honour, their impact on building interpersonal relations and functioning of the local community. The selected area includes the villages of the Mierzeja Wiślana (Vistula Spit) and the Szkarpawa river area belonging to the City of Gdańsk. The court books of the Vistula Spitand the Szkarpawa river, stored in the State Archives in Gdańsk for the years 1578-1626 are the basic source of information. The book was divided into two parts. The first part discusses different types of violence and their relationship with honour. In the first chapter, verbal aggression was analysed, and especially the insult- the most frequent form of violence in the examined sources. The key problem here is to understand the role of verbal expression in the examined cultural circle and its relation to the concept of honour. A separate subchapter presents the problem of accusations of witchcraft. The second chapter was devoted to physical violence. In order to interpret this phenomenon, it was necessary to reflect on the concept of bodily integrity and the meaning of individual parts of the body in the examined cultural circle. A question was also asked about the role of gestures in the act of violence and a scheme of a typical fight was presented. The subject of the third chapter is sexual violence sexual harassment and rape. The emphasis here is put on showing the mechanism of sexual
abuse, its effects, the strategies of the perpetrators and victims, and the reactions of those around them. The analysis has shown that sexual violence is closely linked to the concept of honour. The second part of the book aims to show the phenomenon of violence and honour in interpersonal relations of different nature. In chapter four, the subject of analysis is violence in family relations: between spouses, parents and children, siblings. The mechanism of violence was closely linked to the patriarchal system. Domestic violence in the modern society was legally and socially accepted. However, the book also shows another face of the family in the context of violence - when the family sympathised in external conflicts and fought together for their honour. The last chapter
448 SUMMARY deals with violence and honour in the context of different social relations in the countryside. Ihe first subchapter concerns relations between employers and employees (servants). Beating up subordinates was a legally and socially accepted practice, and financial dependence on the hosts further worsened the situation of the victims. On the other hand, employees also used violence against their superiors, although it sometimes took latent forms. The subject of second subsection is violence in relations between parishioners and pastors as well as teachers. The key issue here was the confessional policy of the authorities, which exacerbated conflicts at the local level. In turn, relations between subordinates and officials were analysed in the third subsection. Violence had an important function in regulating power relations. As honour was the basic criterion for performing all public functions, the possibility of taking it away was the bargaining chip of the subordinate population. Violence, including assaults on honour, also played an important role in neighbourly relations ֊ this is presented in subsection four. Together with a discussion of typical conflict situations, the book raises issues of cooperation and solidarity between rural residents and the mechanisms for regulating internal relations within the community. The last subchapter introduces the analysis of subsequent actors - animals. Playing an extremely important role in the lives of rural residents, they also took part in their conflicts. It is important to point out that they also became victims of
violence, which was usually to be directed against their owners (indirect violence). The studied rural community belonged to the so-called cultures of honour, where an individuals honour is a determining factor of ones identity, a membership of a group, access to the most important resources, a possibility of performing public functions and running a business. Honour was an acquired value through the adherence of cultural norms specific to the community. Whether an individual is honourable was decided by others giving opinions about them. At the same time, honour was an impermanent value - one could lose it at any time. The result of the loss of honour was the loss of group membership, loss of social position, security, social and professional contacts, as well as economic exclusion. The analysis of numerous court cases has shown that the withdrawal of honour has always been the result of violence. Usually it was verbal aggression in the form of libel, slander or gossip, but physical violence could also disgrace the opponent. The results of the presented analysis indicate the need to move away from the stereotypical perception of violence as an action aimed primarily at causing physical suffering to the victim. It turns out that in the studied community, the most frequent aim of the perpetrator
SUMMARY 449 of violence was to hurt the opponent’s honour, and thus to cause social, financial and psychological harm. This then allows us to understand why particular forms of violence were used more often than others, why they were the basis for legal proceedings, what the motives of the perpetrators were and, finally, what the consequences were. Power, physical, financial and social advantage could increase the likelihood of becoming a perpetrator of violence. However, many examples show the opposite ֊ when violence was used against people who were physically stronger, in a better legal situation, with a higher social status and in power. The book shows that violence has often been a way of improving the situation of marginalised groups, who did not have access to official, legal means to defend their interests. This confirms the need to move away from the stereotypical perception of violence as an action inflicted by individuals or groups dominating their subordinates. The book proves that violence should not be seen as an uncontrolled outbreak of negative emotions, but as an individual and group strategy. The book also breaks the classic perception of violence as a factor destabilising social life. In the studied rural community, the individual perpetrator often committed violence not for particular purposes, but in defence of his community. Rural residents who were interdependent from one another cared about the prosperity, security and identity of the entire community, because their own well-being depended on it. Through violence and the taking away of honour, those
who threatened solidarity and common security were excluded from the community. In this way, violence could bring numerous benefits to the community.
