Lithuanian Philosophers on Culture Abstract This book presents a lifetime’s research by the author in the area of Lithuanian philosophy. It examines the ideas of the most prominent Lithuanian thinkers of the twentieth century, ideas that are related to philosophical thought on culture: its essence and its relationship with nature, religion, society, history, ethics, and time. The book consists of two parts. Part I is a revised edition of the monograph Lithuanian Cultural Philosophy. It presents a comprehensive examination of philosophical thought on culture, and traces its development from the emergence of Lithuanian philosophy (i.e. of philosophy written in Lithuanian) in the early twentieth century, when it was embedded in the national revival movement, to its expansion as an independent, systematic, and academic discipline in the First Republic of Lithuania in the in terwar period. Philosophical issues of culture were first raised in searching for the parameters of “the national spirit” and of "distinctive creative ways” examining the relationship between culture and language, and asserting the idea of the human being as a creator in theoand cosmogonic contexts. Later, the initiative in creating the philosophy of culture belonged to Stasys Šalkauskis and Antanas Maceina, philosophers at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas,
біо LITHUANIAN PHILOSOPHERS ON CULTURE who relied on the categories of Neo-Scholastic philosophy, and on the conception of a hierarchical relationship between nature, culture and religion, destabilising these notions and applying them to historiosophical considerations. This initiative began as an attempt to break the ground for a positive cultural project (as opposed to the current idea of cultural crisis), and gradually shifted towards questioning and deconstructing the project’s fundamental tenets. In the course of this shift, Lithuanian phi losophers developed a purely philosophical discourse of analysis, independent of ideological projects. Issues that were widely dis cussed and debated were those of the relationship between the particularity and the universality of culture, the synthesis of the cultures of the East and the West, and other ideas. Philosophical issues of culture were widely examined by prom inent Russian philosophers, who lectured in Lithuanian universi ties at the time and wrote their works in Lithuanian. Writings by Vosylius Sezemanas (Vasily/Wilhelm Sesemann), whose think ing was close to existential phenomenology and philosophical anthropology, and by Lev Karsavin, who continued the tradition of Russian idealism, were especially prominent. They enriched Lithuanian philosophy of culture with analyses of the methodol ogy of history from a hermeneutic standpoint, of the relationship between subjective time and cultural activity, and other issues. Ideologists, journalists, essayists, and pedagogical theorists of all factions ֊ from the far right
to the far left - also discussed current cultural issues, actualising philosophical discussion, and sometimes arriving at philosophical generalisations. At times their work foregrounds unexpected contexts of abstract theo retical constructions. Part II returns, from new perspectives, to some ideas of the same authors (namely, Stasys Šalkauskis, Vosylius Sezemanas, Antanas Maceina), primarily aiming to shed a light on the sig nificance of cultural issues in their philosophical works.
LITHUANIAN PHILOSOPHERS ON CULTURE 611 It attempts to reconstruct a philosophical system assumed in many works by Šalkauskis but never explicitly laid out, and dis cusses the ethical aspects of his cultural philosophy and the cur rency of his philosophical ideas in Lithuania today (these ideas include issues of the specificity of philosophising, the relation ship between universality and the national distinctiveness of cul ture, and the like). This part of the book also re-examines several aspects of Sezemanas's conception of time, and localises it in the history of philosophy, by juxtaposing it with the historically pre ceding conception of Martin Heidegger, and with a subsequent one, of Emmanuel Lévinas. The book analyses the development of Maceina’s philosophical views, and draws attention to his em phasis on the significance of the native language to philosophical thinking, as well as to the similarities between Maceinas’s stance on this issue and the respective ideas of Hans-Georg Gadamer, and differences between them that appear to be no less impor tant than the similarities. Finally, the book examines the conceptions of culture devel oped by two prominent Lithuanian thinkers who after World War II worked in exile: the philosopher Juozas Girnius, who wrote his works only in Lithuanian, and the cultural sociologist Vytautas Kavolis, who wrote in both Lithuanian and English. Girnius’s philosophy grew out of phenomenological and hermeneutic thought (including Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and many others) without as similating
either the thematic issues or the methodologies of Lithuanian cultural philosophy. However, it appears at a more fundamental level that, writing in new cultural, social, and intel lectual settings, Girnius did continue its most important discus sions, intensifying the dilemmas which it faced. Kavolis, whose work spread widely across different areas of sociology (first of all into the sociology of culture, the history of culture, and com parative studies of civilisations), did not consider his writings
6l2 LITHUANIAN PHILOSOPHERS ON CULTURE to be philosophical.
