RÉSUMÉ
Un livre portant sur l’activité théâtrale de la ville d’Arad était devenu depuis
longtemps nécessaire car la seule étude publiée en la matière datait de 1889, étant
souvent tendancieuse et entachée de subjectivité, ignorant des documents de grand
intérêt pour l’activité culturelle de Transylvanie. Notre livre essaie de combler les
lacunes, de remédier au traitement sommaire et discontinu de certains problèmes,
de relever des aspects très importants de l’histoire du théâtre d’Arad, d’autant plus
injustement ignorés qu’ils correspondent à des moments remarquables de l’histoire
du théâtre roumain.
Notre intention a été de rassembler les informations sur l’activité théâtrale
d’Arad afin de mettre en évidence plus précisément ses dimensions dans la
configuration culturelle de l’époque et de mieux surprendre la dynamique de son
évolution. Nous espérons que les faits inédits que nous avons mis au jour
fourniront une image plus généreuse et plus exacte du phénomène théâtral d’Arad
et donneront une signification et une force nouvelles au mouvement artistique de
Transylvanie et du pays entier.
Après avoir centré notre attention sur les débuts du théâtre d’Arad, avec des
informations sur Iacob Hirschi et sur les premiers théâtres «de pierre» de
Roumanie, nous avons insisté sur l’activité des compagnies théâtrales allemandes,
hongroises et serbes, ainsi que sur les tournées effectuées par certaines compagnies
italiennes, japonaises, françaises et espagnoles.
Dans l’histoire de l’activité théâtrale d’Arad, les moments les plus
remarquables sont marqués par les brillantes tournées des compagnies dirigées par
Mihail Pascaly, Matei Millo, Victor Antonescu, I. D. Ionescu, G. A. Petculescu et,
plus tard, Constantin Nottara, Aristide Demetriade, Marioara Voiculescu, Tony
Bulandra etc., des tournées qui ont contribué à l’intégration du public de la partie
occidentale du pays dans l’atmosphère culturelle de toute la spiritualité roumaine.
Nous avons retenu aussi l’activité théâtrale des « dilettantes », le répertoire
théâtral et la dramaturgie de Transylvanie, tout en soulignant que la vocation
principale de l’activité théâtrale roumaine de cette région a été de renforcer chez
les Roumains la conviction qu’ils possédaient une histoire, une langue et une
culture communes, sur lesquelles ils pourraient fonder leur unité politique.
Un élément que nous avons trouvé particulièrement significatif est le
caractère populaire de l’activité théâtrale d’Arad, qui n’a pas hésité d’associer à ses
acteurs des élèves, des artisans, des villageois.
Ses traits essentiels - le militantisme culturel et politique, la fonction
éducative, la promotion de l’unité nationale, la diffusion des grands principes
nationaux et européens - confèrent à l’activité théâtrale d’Arad une signification
qui la rend digne d’être un objet d’investigation historique.
Nos efforts de présenter et d’expliquer l’évolution du théâtre de Transylvanie
et du théâtre d’Arad en particulier, jusqu’à la Grande Union, ont suivi une
approche diachronique.
Le Chapitre qui reflète la vie théâtrale d’Arad pendant la période d’inter
guerre propose, dans une vision unificatrice, une image panoramique de ce
domaine entre 1920-1936: les premières étapes, le répertoire du théâtre roumain,
la réception des tournées théâtrales dans la presse d’Arad - même avec la mention
des documents inédits des Fonds de la Préfecture, de la Mairie d’Arad, du
Ministère des Affaires religieuses et des archives médias.
L’idée de regarder le théâtre de l’intérieur cherche à unir la mémoire média
de mémoire affective. Les documents historiques, parfois insolites, qui sont ralliés
aux documents vifs, oraux, en ce qui concerne les efforts, les projets, les succès, les
échecs, deviendront probablement, en quelques décennies des documents
d’archives dans une possible histoire future du théâtre d’Arad.
Notre intention a été d’aborder l’histoire après-guerre du théâtre d’Arad non
pas comme une succession de saisons théâtrales, comme d’habitude, mais ayant
attention aux décennies de théâtre, dans le but de mettre en évidence la dynamique
de théâtre d’Arad: spectacles, programmes et projets, le répertoire de la littérature
universelle, le répertoire de la dramaturgie inter guerre et contemporaine roumaine.
Le livre vise aussi à prendre soin les festivals de théâtre d’Arad: le Festival
de Théâtre Classique, le Festival de Théâtre de Chambre et Underground, le
Festival International de Théâtre Francophone Amifran, le Festival Interethnique
de Théâtre, avec le sentiment que c’est le point de référence d’un théâtre, avec des
portes ouvertes au niveau national et européen, dans un point de vue parfois
sui-generis.
Enfin, le livre, par le chapitre qui inclut les conversations d’hier et
d’aujourd’hui à Arad, a l’intention de souligner que le théâtre d’Arad représente
l’espace de rencontre de grands acteurs, de metteurs en scène importants, de
dramaturges, critiques ou professeurs universitaires d’envergure, liés, d’une façon
ou d’une autre, avec le théâtre. Cela signifie que le Théâtre d’Arad a une réelle
ouverture vers l’universalité.

ABSTRACT
A book on the theatrical movement in Arad is something we consider
necessary as the only one in the matter was written in 1889 in a subjective and
tendentious manner, not taking into account documents of major interest for the
cultural movement in Transylvania. On the other hand, the problems we are
discussing were treated sporadically and hastily, important issues in the history of
the theatre in Arad being ignored, although they correspond to remarkable
moments in the history of the Romanian theatre.
Our aim is to unify the information about the theatrical movement in Arad in
order to outline clearly its dimensions in the cultural configuration of the epoch and
to notice the dynamics of its evolution. We hope to add new facts providing a more
comprehensive and accurate image of the theatrical phenomenon in Arad, thus
bringing about new meanings of the artistic movement in Transylvania and all over
the country.
After close consideration of the early development of the theatre in Arad,
with extensive reference to Iacob Hirschl and the first ‘stone’ theatres in Romania,
we insisted on the activity of the German, Hungarian and Serbian theatre
companies, as well as on the tours promoted by some Italian, Japanese, French and
Spanish companies.
Remarkable moments in the history of the theatrical movement in Arad are
those represented by the brilliant tours of the companies run by Mihail Pascaly,
Matei Millo, Victor Antonescu, I.D. Ionescu, G.A. Petculescu and afterwards by
Constantin Nottara, Aristide Demetriad, Marioara Voiculescu, Tony Bulandra and
others, tours which contributed to a successful integration of the theatre-goers from
the western part of the country into the cultural ambience of the Romanian
spirituality in its entirety.
One should not disregard the movement of the ‘dilettantes’, the theatre
repertoire and the dramaturgy in Transylvania and its characteristic conviction that
the Romanians have a cohesive history, language and culture, which will lay the
foundations of their future political union.
A significant element worth highlighting is the popular character: the
theatrical movement in Arad encompassed students, craftsmen or villagers among
actors. Such essential features - cultural and political militancy, educative function,
promoter of national unity, diffusion of lofty national and European principles -
provide the theatrical movement in Arad with the value and importance which turn
it into an object for historical investigation.
In our efforts to shed more light on the evolution of the theatre in
Transylvania, and particularly in Arad, we adopted a diachronical approach to this
phenomenon, from its early stages to the decisive moment of the Great Union.
The chapter on the theatrical Arad during the inter-war period frames, in a
unifying perspective, an overview of the Romanian theatrical life in Arad between
1920 and 1936: the first undertakings, the Romanian theatrical repertoire, the
reception of various companies’ tours in the Arad press, doubled by an account,
one might say elaborated, of certain novel documents found in the stock of the
Prefecture of Arad County, of the Arad City Hall, the Ministry of Religious
Denominations, as well as media archives.
Our attempt to provide an inward perspective on theatre focuses on reuniting
media memory with the emotional memory. Thus, historical documents, some of
them unpublished to date, merge with oral, living accounts of endeavours, projects,
successes, failures, which will probably become over the following decades records
for a potential future history of the theatre in Arad.
It was our intention to approach the post-war history of Arad theatre not as a
sequence of seasons - the typical approach of certain theatre institutions -, but
focusing on theatrical decades in order to emphasise the dynamics of the theatrical
phenomenon in Arad: performances, programmes and projects, international
repertoire as well as inter-war and contemporary Romanian dramaturgy.
This volume also accounts for the theatre festivals in Arad: Classical,
Underground, Amifran, Interethnic, as we were driven by the feeling that such an
approach represents a record of some important efforts of the theatre towards a
national and European opening.
Last but not least, in the chapter on past and present interviews in Arad, this
book tries to point out that the theatre of Arad also stands for a meeting point for
great actors, important directors, playwrights, critics or reputed professors
interested in the phenomenon. That means that the theatre of Arad exhibits a
genuine universal opening.
