THE NATURE AND MEANING OF LITHUANIAN ETHICAL IDENTITY
Summary
The monograph hereby introduced to the reader is significant in several respects. First
and foremost, because this problem has hardly ever been investigated, mostly due to the
notion still prevalent in Lithuanian historiography and asserting the essential parity between
values, accepted by a particular ethnic group, and the nation itself.
The author of the monograph makes a clear distinction between ethnicity and nation,
arguing these to be entirely separate phenomena of the human social life, the former constitu¬
ting a formation of prehistorical and pre-political character, whereas the latter vice versa.
Nevertheless, the principal values, including the ethical ones, usually begin to take
shape already during the earliest period of the ethnic existence, along with the language,
religion, mythology, customs, rites, etc.
The special quality of the Lithuanian ethnos is related to its taking root in the Baltic
ethos and having emerged from it in the process of differentiation of the Baltic languages.
According to professor
Marija Gimbutiené,
this segregation took place approximately in the

century B.C.
However, in the course of the entire pre-Christian period, the same ethical values,
especially those inherent in religion, mythology, customs and rituals, applied to Lithuanian
ethnos. It constituted an archaic community, regulated by relatively very similar pre-Christian
customs and laws.
The introduction of Christianity in Lithuania brought along significant changes in the
belief system, ethics, and rituals. The ancient Baltic ones were doomed as sources of all evil,
whereas the new Christian ones proclaimed to be sources of good.
The political existence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the union with Poland is
defined in the monograph as the hegemony of the nobility, characterized by neither national
writing nor administration. Such situation determined denationalization of the Lithuanian
nobles and birth of a new community, based on a notion
gente lituanus,
natione
polonus.
This
process was accompanied by devaluation and decay of the traditional Lithuanian ethical values.
The formation of a new, Christian ethical identity constituted a lengthy and complica¬
ted process, manifesting itself both as crisis and reappraisal of values. Its costs for Lithuania
were very high, including loss of political independence, as well as subsequent downfall of the
Commonwealth of the Two Nations in
1795.
The further formation of Lithuanian ethnicity and nation became inseparable from the
patriarchal village community of bondmen. This is especially true with regard to the preserva¬
tion of Lithuanian language and thriving of Lithuanian ethnic folklore.

cant step in the same direction.
Lithuania entered the period of national liberation from the grip of the Russian empire
as late as the end of the
19'
century, led by
Vincas
Kudirka, Jonas
Basanavičius, Maironis
and
other significant figures of the national revival movement. An especially important change of
this period was introduced by V Kudirka
(1858-1899),
who achieved an essential transforma¬
tion of the centuries-old notion of Lithuanian ethical identity, bringing nationality to the fore
instead of religious affiliation. This meant Lithuanian national ethical identity was from now on
going to comprise such great constituents as language, territory, morals and religion.
The birth of Lithuanian national state in
1918
constitutes a turning point in the age-old
Lithuanian ethnic history. This is when, i.e. along with formation of an independent Lithua¬
nian Republic, an essential prerequisite for an independent political and social existence of a
nation was brought into life for the first time in Lithuanian history, namely, the statehood was
created by the whole nation rather than by its separate social strata.
From then onwards these two principal concepts, those of the nation and the state,
became closely linked. It is during this first period of the national Lithuanian statehood in
1918-
1940
that the basic ethnic, civic, political and intellectual premises for the concept of nationality
were laid. An especially significant role in this respect was played by philosophical works of the
Kaunas University professors Stasys
Šalkauskis, Antanas
Maceina and Juozas Girnius. It is
thanks to them, that notions of the nation and the state became an inherent part of the
Lithuanian ethical and intellectual consciousness and cultural reflection.
The period of
1940-1990
is defined in the monograph as the national disaster. It was
time of an overturn of all the traditional values, including the ethical ones.
The restoration of the Lithuanian national state since the
1990
is defined by the author
of the study also as the ethical and intellectual return of the nation to the traditional European
values. This epoch is marked by Lithuania entering the geopolitical space of the
EU
and NATO.
It is also a preparation period for yet another historical transformation of the values constitu¬
ting the traditional Lithuanian ethical identity. Only this time it is not the national, regional or
religious qualities that are going to play the most important role; rather, it is the diligent and
conscientiously done work, in the form of its results, namely, the top quality and therefore the
best selling products, tha
t
is brought to the first place. It also guarantees historical survival of all
the other traditional ethnical values. The problematic issue here, however, is whether Lithua¬
nia will manage to survive this final historical transformation of the ethical values, as it has
wihtstood all the previous ones. The main danger inherent in this process is that of becoming
a reservation culture, like the North American Indians, who could not adjust themselves to fit the
European values, ethical norms and ideals, brought to them along with colonization.
