Zusammenfassung: | "While 9/11 and its aftermath created a traumatic turning point for most of the writers in this book, it is telling that none of their essays begin with that moment. These young people were living, probing, and shifting their Muslim identities long before 9/11. ... I've heard it said that the second generation never asks the first about its story, but nearly all the essays in this book include long, intimate portrayals of Muslim family life, often going back generations. These young Muslims are constantly negotiating the differences between families for whom faith and culture were matters of honor and North America's youth culture, with its emphasis on questioning, exploring, and inventing one's own destiny."--The Introduction by Eboo Patel. In Growing Up Muslim, Andrew Garrod and Robert Kilkenny present fourteen personal essays by college students of the Muslim faith who are themselves immigrants or are the children of immigrants to the United States. In their essays, the students grapple with matters of ethnicity, religious prejudice and misunderstanding, and what is termed Islamophobia. The fact of 9/11 and subsequent surveillance and suspicion of Islamic Americans (particularly those hailing from the Middle East and the Asian Subcontinent) have had a profound effect on these students, their families, and their communities of origin |

The fact of 9/11 and subsequent surveillance and suspicion of Islamic Americans (particularly those hailing from the Middle East and the Asian Subcontinent) have had a profound effect on these students, their families, and their communities of origin</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">In English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Dartmouth College</subfield><subfield code="x">Students</subfield><subfield code="v">Biography.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Dartmouth College</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Muslim college students</subfield><subfield code="z">New Hampshire</subfield><subfield code="z">Hanover</subfield><subfield code="v">Biography.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Muslim youth</subfield><subfield code="x">Education (Higher)</subfield><subfield code="z">New Hampshire</subfield><subfield code="z">Hanover.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Étudiants musulmans</subfield><subfield code="z">New Hampshire</subfield><subfield code="z">Hanover</subfield><subfield code="v">Biographies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY</subfield><subfield code="x">Educators.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">EDUCATION</subfield><subfield code="x">Higher.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Muslim college students</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Students</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">New Hampshire</subfield><subfield code="z">Hanover</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJfx4B4rKY3qfdcVmW6tKd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Biography</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D019215</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies.</subfield><subfield code="2">lcgft</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026049</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvmgf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Garrod, Andrew,</subfield><subfield code="d">1937-</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjF3Vgvc96YBdFgCYDr6rq</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr88012227</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Kilkenny, Robert,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Ahmed, Zahra.</subfield><subfield code="t">Far from getting lost.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Growing up Muslim (Garrod and Kilkenny) (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFBWFyRJBY4MWtmgGkpxCP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Growing up Muslim (Garrod and Kilkenny).</subfield><subfield code="t">Growing up Muslim</subfield><subfield code="z">9780801452529</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2013037424</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)858778295</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EDU</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EDU</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=671287</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">30391371</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780801470530</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - "While 9/11 and its aftermath created a traumatic turning point for most of the writers in this book, it is telling that none of their essays begin with that moment.
