Zusammenfassung: | "Boys are emotionally illiterate and don't want intimate friendships". In this empirically grounded challenge to our stereotypes about boys and men, the author reveals the intense intimacy among teenage boys especially during early and middle adolescence. Boys not only share their deepest secrets and feelings with their closest male friends, they claim that without them they would go "wacko." Yet as boys become men, they become distrustful, lose these friendships, and feel isolated and alone. Drawing from hundreds of interviews conducted throughout adolescence with black, Latino, white, and Asian American boys, this work reveals the ways in which we have been telling ourselves a false story about boys, friendships, and human nature. Boys' descriptions of their male friendships sound more like "something out of Love Story than Lord of the Flies." Yet in late adolescence, boys feel they have to "man up" by becoming stoic and independent. Vulnerable emotions and intimate friendships are for girls and gay men. "No homo" becomes their mantra. These findings are alarming, given what we know about links between friendships and health, and even longevity. Rather than a "boy crisis," the author argues that boys are experiencing a "crisis of connection" because they live in a culture where human needs and capacities are given a sex (female) and a sexuality (gay), and thus discouraged for those who are neither. The author argues that the solution lies with exposing the inaccuracies of our gender stereotypes and fostering these critical relationships and fundamental human skills.--From publisher information. |

The author argues that the solution lies with exposing the inaccuracies of our gender stereotypes and fostering these critical relationships and fundamental human skills.--From publisher information.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">In English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Male friendship.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh93005650</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Emotions in adolescence.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh90004943</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Emotions in children.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85042825</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Amitié masculine.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Émotions chez l'adolescent.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Émotions chez l'enfant.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS</subfield><subfield code="x">Life Stages</subfield><subfield code="x">Adolescence.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PSYCHOLOGY</subfield><subfield code="x">Developmental</subfield><subfield code="x">Adolescent.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS</subfield><subfield code="x">Life Stages</subfield><subfield code="x">Teenagers.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Emotions in adolescence</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Emotions in children</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Male friendship</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Deep secrets (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGY8Y9KG7mBwVkdGd6Y8hb</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Way, Niobe, 1963-</subfield><subfield code="t">Deep secrets.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 2011</subfield><subfield code="z">9780674046641</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2010047702</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)676725355</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EDU</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EDU</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=361668</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH37532003</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">deepsecretsboysf0000wayn</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780674061361</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Boys' friendships and the crisis of connection Cambridge, Massachusetts : Harvard University Press, 2011. ©2011 1 online resource (326 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier text file PDF rda Includes bibliographical references and index. The hidden landscape of boys' friendships -- Investigating boys, friendships, and human nature -- I: Friendships during early and middle adolescence. "Sometimes you need to spill your heart out to somebody" -- Boys with feelings -- Nick and George: stories of resistance -- II: Friendships during late adolescence. "When you grow up, your heart dies" -- As boys become men -- Fernando and Danny -- The crisis of connection. "Boys are emotionally illiterate and don't want intimate friendships".
