Zusammenfassung: | In this publication, Newman and Kenworthy look at how we can accelerate a planning approach to designing urban environments that can function reliably and conveniently on alternative modes. They consider a refined and more civilized automobile playing a very much reduced and manageable role in urban transportation. The authors examine the rise and fall of automobile dependence using updated data on 44 global cities to better understand how to facilitate and guide cities to the most productive and sustainable outcomes. This is the final volume in a trilogy by Newman and Kenworthy on automobile dependence (Cities and Automobile Dependence in 1989 and Sustainability and Cities: Overcoming Automobile Dependence in 1999). Like all good trilogies this one shows the rise of an empire, in this case that of the automobile, the peak of its power, and the decline of that empire. |

Like all good trilogies this one shows the rise of an empire, in this case that of the automobile, the peak of its power, and the decline of that empire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Urban transportation policy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85141334</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Urban transportation</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Sustainable development.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh92005743</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Land use, Urban.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85074353</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Automobiles</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85010254</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Transports urbains</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique gouvernementale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Transports urbains</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect de l'environnement.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Développement durable.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Utilisation urbaine du sol.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Automobiles</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect de l'environnement.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">sustainable development.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">urban land use.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Highway & traffic engineering.</subfield><subfield code="2">bicssc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">The environment.</subfield><subfield code="2">bicssc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Industries</subfield><subfield code="x">Transportation.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">TRANSPORTATION</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Transportation.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Automobiles</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Land use, Urban</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sustainable development</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Urban transportation</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Urban transportation policy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Kenworthy, Jeffrey R.,</subfield><subfield code="d">1955-</subfield><subfield code="e">author.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjwcjmJRHP8jqYxWCYHPkP</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88275060</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The end of automobile dependence (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGG77W9BjFkvBbMkcjK3Yq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Printed edition:</subfield><subfield code="z">9781597267700</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBU</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBU</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1026550</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH29060686</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - In this publication, Newman and Kenworthy look at how we can accelerate a planning approach to designing urban environments that can function reliably and conveniently on alternative modes.
