Zusammenfassung: | International development has its origins in the histories of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European colonisation. What happens when a leading colonial power decides to transform a model tropical colony, relying on head-loading of goods as the predominant form of transport, into a modern market economy on the back of the greatest British industrial ingenuity of the time - railways? In this book, the author brings to light the historical origins of a wide range of issues confronting present-day international development researchers and policy-makers, such as technology transfer, wealth creation versus equity of access, and ways to evaluate the benefits of development work, especially across cultures. In the context of the early twenty-first-century international investment interests in resource-rich Africa, the author argues, forensic historical research is required to determine the precise nature and scale of the financial and humanitarian injustices committed by British colonialists during the construction of major public works projects. More than providing opportunities to take possible legal actions for reparations, this research should also serve as a reminder to African policy-makers and their international and local business partners that the injustices and blatant abuses of power of the past should never be repeated. |

In the context of the early twenty-first-century international investment interests in resource-rich Africa, the author argues, forensic historical research is required to determine the precise nature and scale of the financial and humanitarian injustices committed by British colonialists during the construction of major public works projects. More than providing opportunities to take possible legal actions for reparations, this research should also serve as a reminder to African policy-makers and their international and local business partners that the injustices and blatant abuses of power of the past should never be repeated.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Railroads</subfield><subfield code="z">Ghana</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Economic development</subfield><subfield code="z">Ghana</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Ghana</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85054760</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Chemins de fer</subfield><subfield code="z">Ghāna</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Développement économique</subfield><subfield code="z">Ghāna</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Ghāna</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">TRANSPORTATION</subfield><subfield code="x">Railroads</subfield><subfield code="x">Pictorial.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Economic development</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Railroads</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ghana</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJrwWdFrtwYQThrFvRGJXd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">From head-loading to the iron horse (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFBxcQ7JVTPg4mqT6hrhxP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Tsey, Komla.</subfield><subfield code="t">From head-loading to the iron horse.</subfield><subfield code="d">Bamenda, Cameroon : Langaa Research & Publishing cig ; [Oxford] : Distributed in and outside N. International development has its origins in the histories of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European colonisation.
