Zusammenfassung: | First, Canada's primary source for immigrants has shifted dramatically from the United Kingdom and Europe to countries outside Europe. Second there has been a remarkable transformation in the nature of work: Canada's economy has changed from relying on resource extraction to an emphasis on manufacturing, and presently is emerging as post-industrial and knowledge-based. Pendakur combines an analysis of parliamentary debates on immigration issues with an evaluation of the regulatory and policy changes that resulted from these discussions and an analysis of how the work of immigrants changed over a five-decade. He then provides both a political and quantitative analysis by looking at issues that affect not only immigrants but minorities born in Canada in order to assess the degree to which labour market discrimination exists and whether employment equity programs are needed. |

He then provides both a political and quantitative analysis by looking at issues that affect not only immigrants but minorities born in Canada in order to assess the degree to which labour market discrimination exists and whether employment equity programs are needed.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Immigrants</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic conditions.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Canada</subfield><subfield code="x">Emigration and immigration</subfield><subfield code="x">Government policy.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Travailleurs étrangers</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Immigrants</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada</subfield><subfield code="x">Conditions économiques.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Canada</subfield><subfield code="x">Émigration et immigration</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique gouvernementale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Labor.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Labor & Industrial Relations.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Emigration and immigration</subfield><subfield code="x">Government policy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Immigrants</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic conditions</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Canada</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJkMHVW4rfVXPrhVP4VwG3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Immigrants and the labour force (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFWKw6Jy4xCFYQjmTMWrG3</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Pendakur, Ravi.</subfield><subfield code="t">Immigrants and the labour force.</subfield><subfield code="d">Montreal : McGill-Queen's University Press, 2000</subfield><subfield code="z">0773520589</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2001411308</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)43276048</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBU</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBU</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=404327</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780773568495</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Canadian Electronic Library</subfield><subfield code="b">CELB</subfield><subfield code="n">10119851</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3330545</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10132726</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">404327</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">3010965</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBU</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

First, Canada's primary source for immigrants has shifted dramatically from the United Kingdom and Europe to countries outside Europe. Pendakur combines an analysis of parliamentary debates on immigration issues with an evaluation of the regulatory and policy changes that resulted from these discussions and an analysis of how the work of immigrants changed over a five-decade.
