Zusammenfassung: | The book explores how and why two self-identified middle powers adopted such distinctive styles in their diplomatic approaches. Focusing on a period of crucial developments in diplomacy, Andrew Cooper analyses the policies of each country, emphasizes distinctive interests and policies, and systematically compares key features of the actions of the two countries. While the book is very much policy driven, it is also firmly based on an appreciation of the distinctiveness of Australia and Canada. Cooper argues that the contemporary expression of duality in diplomatic approach can only be fully understood when set against the divergent historical experiences of the two countries. Not only has the structural, situational, and psychological location of Australia and Canada set them apart throughout the postwar period, but their pattern of political development has differed appreciably. |

Cooper argues that the contemporary expression of duality in diplomatic approach can only be fully understood when set against the divergent historical experiences of the two countries. Not only has the structural, situational, and psychological location of Australia and Canada set them apart throughout the postwar period, but their pattern of political development has differed appreciably.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Produce trade</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Produce trade</subfield><subfield code="z">Australia.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Produce trade</subfield><subfield code="x">International cooperation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Produits agricoles</subfield><subfield code="x">Commerce</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Produits agricoles</subfield><subfield code="x">Commerce</subfield><subfield code="z">Australie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Produits agricoles</subfield><subfield code="x">Commerce</subfield><subfield code="x">Coopération internationale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Exports & Imports.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">International</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">International</subfield><subfield code="x">Marketing.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">International Relations</subfield><subfield code="x">Trade & Tariffs.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Industries</subfield><subfield code="x">Agribusiness.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Produce trade</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Produce trade</subfield><subfield code="x">International cooperation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Australia</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRv8PPH7gCqhkJ8DK8bM</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Canada</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJkMHVW4rfVXPrhVP4VwG3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">In between countries (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCG4DWCvvygV8FKkG6Hq98P</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Cooper, Andrew Fenton, 1950-</subfield><subfield code="t">In between countries.</subfield><subfield code="d">Montreal : McGill-Queen's University Press, ©1997</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 97900676</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBU</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBU</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=404331</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Brodart</subfield><subfield code="b">BROD</subfield><subfield code="n">51301601</subfield><subfield code="c">$49.95</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Canadian Electronic Library</subfield><subfield code="b">CELB</subfield><subfield code="n">10138998</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Middle Power Commonalities and National Differences -- Divergent Followership -- Hard and Soft States: The Domestic Context of Agricultural Trade -- Hanging Separately: Coping with Uncertainty -- Hanging Together: The Evolution of the Cairns Group -- The Politics of Initiative in Australia -- The Politics of Accommodation in Canada -- Commitment and Convenience. The book explores how and why two self-identified middle powers adopted such distinctive styles in their diplomatic approaches.
