Zusammenfassung: | This book is about village governance in China during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Drawing on government archives from Huailu county, Hebei province, it explores local practices and official systems of social control, land taxation, and "self government" at the village level. Its analysis of peasant behaviors bridges the gap between the rational choice and moral economy models by taking into account both material and symbolic dimensions of power and interest in the peasant community. The author's interpretation of village/state relations before 1900 transcends the state and society dichotomy and accentuates the interplay between formal and informal institutions and practices. His account of "state making" after 1900 underscores the continuity of endogenous arrangements in the course of institutional formalization and the interpenetration between official discourse and popular notions in the new process of political legitimization. |

His account of "state making" after 1900 underscores the continuity of endogenous arrangements in the course of institutional formalization and the interpenetration between official discourse and popular notions in the new process of political legitimization.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Land use</subfield><subfield code="x">Taxation</subfield><subfield code="z">China</subfield><subfield code="z">Huolu Xian.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Huolu Xian (China)</subfield><subfield code="x">Politics and government.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">International</subfield><subfield code="x">Taxation.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politics and government</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">China</subfield><subfield code="z">Huolu Xian</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Village governance in North China, 1875-1936 (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFCRWHVhKMbfXqkmfMKRgC</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Li, Huaiyin.</subfield><subfield code="t">Village governance in North China, 1875-1936.</subfield><subfield code="d">Stanford, Calif. : Stanford University Press, 2005</subfield><subfield code="z">0804750912</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2004013447</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)55744401</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBU</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBU</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=136153</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Baker & Taylor</subfield><subfield code="b">BKTY</subfield><subfield code="c">60.00</subfield><subfield code="d">60.00</subfield><subfield code="i">0804750912</subfield><subfield code="n">0006057590</subfield><subfield code="s">active</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10080411</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">136153</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2357645</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">3319764</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBU</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Introduction -- The setting -- Cooperation and control in the peasant community -- Rules, self interest, and strategies -- Tax collection -- Land and tax administration -- Power, discourse, and legitimacy -- Cooperation and conflict over village schools -- Elite activism -- Village reorganization -- Uncovering "black land." Print version record. This book is about village governance in China during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
