Zusammenfassung: | "At a time when many individuals and institutions are reexamining their histories to better understand their tangled roots of racism and oppression, Reckoning: Kalamazoo College Uncovers Its Racial and Colonial Past tells the story of how American ideas about colonialism and race shaped Kalamazoo College, a progressive liberal arts institution in the Midwest. Beginning with its founding in 1833 during the era of Indian Removal, the book follows the development of the college through the Civil War, the long period of racial entrenchment that followed Reconstruction, minstrel shows performed on campus in the 1950s during the rise of the Civil Rights movement, Black student activism in the wake of Martin Luther King's assassination, the quest for multiculturalism in the 1990s, and the recent activism of a changing student body. This close look at the colonial and racial history of one institution reveals academia's investment in White supremacy and the permutations and contradictions of race and racism in higher education. Though the details are unique to Kalamazoo, other predominantly White colleges and universities would have similar historical trajectories, for in the end our institutional histories reflect the history of the United States. By examining the ways in which a progressive, midwestern college has absorbed, resisted, and perpetuated American systems of colonialism and racism, the book challenges higher education to use this moment to make the deep, structural changes necessary to eliminate disparities in experiences and outcomes among students of color and their White peers."-- |

"At a time when many individuals and institutions are reexamining their histories to better understand their tangled roots of racism and oppression, Reckoning: Kalamazoo College Uncovers Its Racial and Colonial Past tells the story of how American ideas about colonialism and race shaped Kalamazoo College, a progressive liberal arts institution in the Midwest. By examining the ways in which a progressive, midwestern college has absorbed, resisted, and perpetuated American systems of colonialism and racism, the book challenges higher education to use this moment to make the deep, structural changes necessary to eliminate disparities in experiences and outcomes among students of color and their White peers."-- Provided by publisher Cover -- Half-Title -- Title -- Copyright -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Notes on Language -- Introduction -- Chapter One: Ascendancy -- "Hardly Enough Left to Cover the Bones" -- "To Take Ascendancy by Right of Priority" -- "Not Counting Indians" -- "Swap and Dicker" -- "For the Instruction of Young Ladies and Gentlemen" -- "We Have Not a Mind to Remove to a Distant Land" -- "An Academic Grove Worthy of Plato and His Pupils" -- Chapter Two: Dissenters and Heretics -- From Slavery to a Black Mecca -- Of Segregationists, Assimilationists, and Anti-Racists -- "I Want to Be Off for Africa" -- "The Narrow Spirit of Sectarianism and Bigotry" -- Heretics -- "A Live Man, in Every Sense of the Term" -- Chapter Three: The Shape of Things -- The New White City -- The Ivory Tower -- "The Negro Problem" -- "America for Americans" -- Missionary Mindset -- "A Sprinkling of Units from Other Ethnic Cultures" -- Unbidden -- Chapter Four: Behind the Mask -- An Indian Prince -- Happy Days -- "Flagrant Examples of Discrimination Are Everywhere Present" -- The Civil Rights Movement as Seen from the Kalamazoo College Campus -- "A Great Deal of Patience and Tact." -- Chapter Five: "There Is No Innocence" -- "Our Uneasy Silence" -- "Boiling Water" College -- "You Have to Be 'Somebody'" -- "Black Is Beautiful" -- "Our Time Is Extremely Valuable and Can Be Wasted No Longer" -- "You Must Attempt to Stand Where We Are Standing" -- "The Most Volatile Act That Can Be Taken" -- Chapter Six: The Brick Wall -- Backsliding -- "Where Are Your Cultural Differences?" -- The Quest for Multiculturalism -- "The Sun Setting in the West" -- Bad Apples -- Conclusion: Bending the Arc -- About the Author -- Index Online resource; title from PDF title page (ProQuest Ebook Central, viewed July 17, 2023).
