Zusammenfassung: | "From fleeing the Warsaw Ghetto and living underground to fighting for social justice in 60's Seattle to helping smash the communist system in 80's Poland, this is a narrative that erupts into critical moments in Jewish, Polish and American history. It is also a story of the hidden anguish that accompanies and courses through that history, of the living haunted by the dead. The story is told through a dialogue, often contentious, between Michael Steinlauf, historian of Polish-Jewish culture and child of Holocaust survivors, and the Polish anthropologist and artist Elżbieta Janicka. It is illustrated with scores of photographs and documents"-- |
Beschreibung: | "This book began in 2014 when Elżbieta Janicka approached Michael Steinlauf about the possibility of conducting a long, multifaceted interview with him. Such an endeavor is a Polish genre known as wywiad-rzeka, interview-river. Over the following years, Janicka and Steinlauf met in Warsaw and Philadelphia, recorded their conversations, in Polish, and assembled them into a narrative which was published in a journal of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. An expanded version was translated by Steinlauf into English. In your hands or on your screen, dear reader, are the results."--Preface. Originally published in Polish as: "'To nie była Ameryka.' Z Michaelem Charlesem Steinlaufem rozmawia Elżbieta Janicka (Warszawa-Nowy Jork--Warszawa, 2014-2015)," Studia Litteraria Historica 3, no. 4 (2014-15); an expanded version was translated by Steinlauf into English.--Preface. |

Michael Steinlauf and Elżbieta Janicka wrangle through Polish Jewish-American history Boston : Cherry Orchard Books, 2022. 1 online resource text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier "This book began in 2014 when Elżbieta Janicka approached Michael Steinlauf about the possibility of conducting a long, multifaceted interview with him. Includes bibliographical references. Poland, 1980s -- Columbia, 1960s -- Seattle, First Half of the 1970s -- Brighton Beach, 1950s -- Brandeis, 1979-88 -- Bondage to the Dead, First Time Around -- Bondage to the Dead, Second Time Around -- Moses ... Moyshe ... Michał ... Maryś ... Michel ... Michael ..., First Time Around -- Moses ... Moyshe ... Michał ... Maryś ... Michel ... Michael ..., Michael Second Time Around. "From fleeing the Warsaw Ghetto and living underground to fighting for social justice in 60's Seattle to helping smash the communist system in 80's Poland, this is a narrative that erupts into critical moments in Jewish, Polish and American history. It is illustrated with scores of photographs and documents"-- Provided by publisher. Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on October 25, 2022).
