Zusammenfassung: | "In 1945 Japan had to adjust very rapidly to sudden defeat, to the arrival of the American Occupation and to the encounter with the English language, together with a different outlook on many aspects of society and government. This scholarly book is based on in-depth interviews with people, now aged, who were school students at the time of the Occupation and who experienced at first hand this immense cultural change. The book considers the nature of the changing outlook, including democratization, the new role for the Japanese Emperor and all this represented for the place of tradition in Japanese life and the growing emphasis on individualism away from collectivism, discusses the changing system of education itself, including new structures and new textbooks, and relates the feelings of the participants as they came to terms with defeat and the language and culture of the former enemy. Overall, the book provides a fascinating insight into a key period of Japanese history."--Provided by publisher. |

Overall, the book provides a fascinating insight into a key period of Japanese history."--Provided by publisher.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="506" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Legal Deposit;</subfield><subfield code="c">Only available on premises controlled by the deposit library and to one user at any one time;</subfield><subfield code="e">The Legal Deposit Libraries (Non-Print Works) Regulations (UK).</subfield><subfield code="5">WlAbNL</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">English language</subfield><subfield code="x">Study and teaching</subfield><subfield code="z">Japan</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Anglais (Langue)</subfield><subfield code="x">Étude et enseignement</subfield><subfield code="z">Japon</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES / General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">English language</subfield><subfield code="x">Study and teaching</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bilingualism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Comparative education</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Education</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Study skills</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Japan</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Buchanan, John</subfield><subfield code="c">(Professor of education),</subfield><subfield code="e">author.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2018020710</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">English language teaching during Japan's post-war occupation (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFCY387hpYHcjWPY8Krg8C</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">English language teaching during Japan's post-war occupation politics and pedagogy</subfield><subfield code="d">London ; "In 1945 Japan had to adjust very rapidly to sudden defeat, to the arrival of the American Occupation and to the encounter with the English language, together with a different outlook on many aspects of society and government.
