Zusammenfassung: | Shanti Kumar's "Gandhi Meets Primetime examines how cultural imaginations of national identity have been transformed by the rapid growth of satellite and able television in postcolonial India. To evaluate the growing influence of foreign and domestic satellite and cable channels since 1991, the book considers a wide range of materials including contemporary television programming, historical archives, legal documents, policy statements, academic writings and journalistic accounts. Kumar argues that India's hybrid national identity is manifested in the discourses found in this variety of empirical sources. He deconstructs representations of Mahatma Gandhi as the Father of the Nation on the state-sponsored network Doordarshan and those found on Rupert Murdoch's STAR TV network. The book closely analyzes print advertisements to trace the changing status of the television set as a cultural commodity in postcolonial India and examines publicity brochures, promotional materials and programming schedules of India-language networks to outline the role of vernacular media in the discourse of electronic capitalism. The empirical evidence is illuminated by theoretical analyses that combine diverse approaches such as cultural studies, poststructuralism and postcolonial criticism. |

television in postcolonial India. The empirical evidence is illuminated by theoretical analyses that combine diverse approaches such as cultural studies, poststructuralism and postcolonial criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Television broadcasting</subfield><subfield code="z">India.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Television broadcasting</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">India.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Télévision</subfield><subfield code="z">Inde.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Télévision</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social</subfield><subfield code="z">Inde.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING</subfield><subfield code="x">Television & Video.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Media Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Television broadcasting</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Television broadcasting</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">India</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJmdx47cDXrRhBXHtbvPwC</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nationalismus</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4041300-7</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Globalisierung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4557997-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Indien</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4026722-2</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Fernsehen</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4016825-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic book.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Gandhi Meets Primetime (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCXyd9VDTFCfb6xm6m6vdV3</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Gandhi meets primetime</subfield><subfield code="z">025203001X</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2004029691</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Popular culture and politics in Asia Pacific.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2004058097</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=569934</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3413998</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10593670</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">569934</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">gandhimeetsprime0000kuma</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse23858</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">9632116</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Print version record. Shanti Kumar's "Gandhi Meets Primetime examines how cultural imaginations of national identity have been transformed by the rapid growth of satellite and able television in postcolonial India. Television broadcasting India.
