Summary:The extraordinary story of the four campuses of UZ Leuven The Leuven academic hospitals have become a symbol of medical cutting-edge technology and top medicine. This book outlines their history and highlights the development of four campuses: Salve Mater in Lovenjoel, Sint-Barbara in Pellenberg, Sint-Rafaël and Sint-Pieters in the Leuven city centre, and Gasthuisberg just outside the city. It follows the evolution of Leuven healthcare from the boardrooms to the bedside, from the First World War to the present. This evolution was characterised by extraordinary growth, behind which a complex interplay of knowledge production, state formation, ideology and language struggle was hidden. The development of the Belgian welfare state, the battle for Leuven-Flemish, the increase in medical specialisation and the secularisation of society: these were processes that required a continuous modernisation of the hospital. Doctors, nurses and patients struggled with these changing structures. This book tells their stories. This publication is GPRC-labelled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).
