Zusammenfassung: | The Sasanian Empire (3rd -7th centuries) was one of the largest empires of antiquity, stretching from Mesopotamia to modern Pakistan and from Central Asia to the Arabian Peninsula. This mega-empire withstood powerful opponents in the steppe and expanded further in Late Antiquity, whilst the Roman world shrunk in size. Recent research has revealed the reasons for this success, notably population growth in some key territories, economic prosperity and urban development, made possible through investment in agriculture and military infrastructure on a scale unparalleled in the late antique world. Our volume explores the empire's relations with its neighbours and key phenomena which contributed to its wealth and power, from the empire's armed forces to agriculture, trade and treatment of minorities. The latest discoveries, notably major urban foundations, fortifications and irrigations systems, feature prominently. An empire whose might and culture rivalled Rome and foreshadowed the caliphate will be of interest to scholars of the Roman and Islamic world. |

An empire whose might and culture rivalled Rome and foreshadowed the caliphate will be of interest to scholars of the Roman and Islamic world.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Sassanids.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117620</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Excavations (Archaeology)</subfield><subfield code="z">Iran.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85046145</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Iran</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">To 640.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85067896</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Sassanides.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Iran</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">Jusqu'à 651.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">Civilization.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">Ancient</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Excavations (Archaeology)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sassanids</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Iran</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtrYvcVTwChrDqytBvJXd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">To 640</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Sauer, Eberhard W.,</subfield><subfield code="d">1970-</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtRJVYbVqPVYVQVfXPCwC</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2003038400</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Sasanian Persia (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGwKtq6YYPGV36ktkYQbcX</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Sasanian Persia.</subfield><subfield code="d">Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press, [2017]</subfield><subfield code="z">9781474401012</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2017446791</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)994727973</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Edinburgh studies in ancient Persia.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2014081893</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1584903</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH33867921</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH33708053</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL5012371</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">1584903</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">14774261</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

The Sasanian Empire (3rd -7th centuries) was one of the largest empires of antiquity, stretching from Mesopotamia to modern Pakistan and from Central Asia to the Arabian Peninsula. Print version record.
