Zusammenfassung: | "Before he became one of Canada's most influential and popular twentieth-century poets, Earle Birney lived a double life. To his students and colleagues, he was an engaging university lecturer and scholar. But for seven years from 1933 to 1940, the great Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky was the focus of his writing and much of his life. Although Lenin favoured Trotsky to succeed him as leader of the USSR, Stalin outmanouvred Trotsky and banished him. Yet for thousands of followers like Birney, the former head of the Red Army and literary intellectual charted the path to true socialism through world-wide revolution. During his years as a Trotskyist in Canada, the United States and England, Birney wrote extensively about Trotsky, corresponded with Trotsky, organized Trotskyist cells in two countries, recruited in behalf of Trotskyism, lectured about Trotsky, and interviewed Trotsky himself over several days. One of his two novels is based on some of these Trotskyist activities. For the first time this book presents all Birney's known published and unpublished writing on Trotsky and Trotskyism, including their correspondence, a selection of other letters on his political work, and his literary writing from a demonstrably Trotskyist perspective. As well as providing original source material for helping to understand Canadian Trotskyism, the volume traces the origins of Trotsky's mistrust of "the British" to his experiences in Canada; shows Birney's influence on a major change in Trotsky's policy of "entrism" in British politics; includes the largest body of Trotskyist criticism in Canadian literary history; and demonstrates the need for a radical re-reading of Birney's poetry in light of his Trotskyism."-- |

As well as providing original source material for helping to understand Canadian Trotskyism, the volume traces the origins of Trotsky's mistrust of "the British" to his experiences in Canada; shows Birney's influence on a major change in Trotsky's policy of "entrism" in British politics; includes the largest body of Trotskyist criticism in Canadian literary history; and demonstrates the need for a radical re-reading of Birney's poetry in light of his Trotskyism."--</subfield><subfield code="c">Provided by publisher.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="g">Machine generated contents note:</subfield><subfield code="g">I.</subfield><subfield code="t">"OPTIMISTIC SORT OF REVOLUTIONARY," 1933 -- 1935 --</subfield><subfield code="g">1.</subfield><subfield code="t">Report to the Toronto Branch of the International Left Opposition --</subfield><subfield code="g">2.</subfield><subfield code="t">Letter to an American Medical Student --</subfield><subfield code="g">3.</subfield><subfield code="t">Mine Strike, Martial Law and a Student Delegation --</subfield><subfield code="g">4.</subfield><subfield code="t">To the Section Bureau, CPUSA, Salt Lake City, Utah --</subfield><subfield code="g">5.</subfield><subfield code="t">To the Salt Lake Section Committee, CPUSA --</subfield><subfield code="g">6.</subfield><subfield code="t">Letter Refused by the Salt Lake City Press --</subfield><subfield code="g">7.</subfield><subfield code="t">In Defence of Party Democracy --</subfield><subfield code="g">8.</subfield><subfield code="t">Struggle Against British Imperialism --</subfield><subfield code="g">II.</subfield><subfield code="t">CONVERSATIONS WITH TROTSKY, 1935 --</subfield><subfield code="g">9.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Trotsky, 5 November 1935 --</subfield><subfield code="g">10.</subfield><subfield code="t">Interviewing Leon Trotsky, 19 -- 23 November 1935 --</subfield><subfield code="g">11.</subfield><subfield code="t">Conversations with Trotsky --</subfield><subfield code="g">12.</subfield><subfield code="t">Further Conversations with Trotsky --</subfield><subfield code="g">13.</subfield><subfield code="t">Trotsky on the Canadian Farmer --</subfield><subfield code="g">14.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Trotsky, 8 December 1935 --</subfield><subfield code="g">15.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Trotsky, 16 December 1935 --</subfield><subfield code="g">III.</subfield><subfield code="t">POLITICAL WRITINGS, 1935 -- 1939 --</subfield><subfield code="g">16.</subfield><subfield code="t">Incident in Berlin --</subfield><subfield code="g">17.</subfield><subfield code="t">Trotsky to Birney, 19 January 1936 --</subfield><subfield code="g">18.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Trotsky, 14 February 1936 --</subfield><subfield code="g">19.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Trotsky, 27 February 1936 --</subfield><subfield code="g">20.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Trotsky, 29 January 1937 --</subfield><subfield code="g">21.</subfield><subfield code="t">Another Month -- January --</subfield><subfield code="g">22.</subfield><subfield code="t">Another Month -- February --</subfield><subfield code="g">23.</subfield><subfield code="t">Another Month -- March --</subfield><subfield code="g">24.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Joe Hansen, 15 November 1937 --</subfield><subfield code="g">25.</subfield><subfield code="t">Trotsky to Birney, 27 November 1937 --</subfield><subfield code="g">26.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Trotsky, 2 January 1938 --</subfield><subfield code="g">27.</subfield><subfield code="t">Canadian Capitalism and the Strategy of the Revolutionary Movement --</subfield><subfield code="g">28.</subfield><subfield code="t">Land of the Maple Leaf Is the Land of Monopoly --</subfield><subfield code="g">29.</subfield><subfield code="t">Is French Canada Going Fascist? --</subfield><subfield code="g">30.</subfield><subfield code="t">Trotsky to Birney, 5 June 1939 --</subfield><subfield code="g">31.</subfield><subfield code="t">Birney to Trotsky, 6 June 1939 --</subfield><subfield code="g">32.</subfield><subfield code="t">War Is Here -- What Now? --</subfield><subfield code="g">IV.</subfield><subfield code="t">LITERATURE AND REVOLUTION, 1934 -- 1940 --</subfield><subfield code="g">33.</subfield><subfield code="t">Escape by Emetic --</subfield><subfield code="g">34.</subfield><subfield code="t">On "Proletarian Literature" --</subfield><subfield code="g">35.</subfield><subfield code="t">Brave New Words of Aldous Huxley --</subfield><subfield code="g">36.</subfield><subfield code="t">Cecil Day Lewis, The Loving Communist --</subfield><subfield code="g">37.</subfield><subfield code="t">Proletarian Literature: Theory and Practice --</subfield><subfield code="g">38.</subfield><subfield code="t">What Do Canadians Tell Stories About? --</subfield><subfield code="g">39.</subfield><subfield code="t">R.M.
