Zusammenfassung: | Echoing Joseph Paxton's question at the close of the Great Exhibition, 'What is to become of the Crystal Palace?', this interdisciplinary essay collection argues that there is considerable potential in studying this unique architectural and art-historical document after 1851, when it was rebuilt in the South London suburb of Sydenham. It brings together research on objects, materials and subjects as diverse as those represented under the glass roof of the Sydenham Palace itself; from the Venus de Milo to Sheffield steel, souvenir 'peep eggs' to war memorials, portrait busts to imperial pageants, tropical plants to cartoons made by artists on the spot, copies of paintings from ancient caves in India to 1950s film. Essays do not simply catalogue and collect this eclectic congregation, but provide new ways for assessing the significance of the Sydenham Crystal Palace for both nineteenth- and twentieth-century studies. The volume will be of particular interest to researchers and students of British cultural history, museum studies, and art history. |

The volume will be of particular interest to researchers and students of British cultural history, museum studies, and art history.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Crystal Palace (Sydenham, London, England)</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Crystal Palace (Londres, Angleterre)</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Crystal Palace (Sydenham, London, England)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Modernism (Art)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85086445</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Modernisme (Art)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ARCHITECTURE</subfield><subfield code="x">Buildings</subfield><subfield code="x">Public, Commercial & Industrial.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Modernism (Art)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nutzung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4120814-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Architektur</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4002851-3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">London-Sydenham</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Kristallpalast London</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4361287-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Nichols, Kate,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Turner, Sarah Victoria,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="z">9780719096495</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1695470</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9781526114938</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH30968661</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH30968660</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL5236872</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">1695470</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Oxford University Press USA</subfield><subfield code="b">OUPR</subfield><subfield code="n">EDZ0001721796</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">14274914</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">15122872</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Echoing Joseph Paxton's question at the close of the Great Exhibition, 'What is to become of the Crystal Palace?', this interdisciplinary essay collection argues that there is considerable potential in studying this unique architectural and art-historical document after 1851, when it was rebuilt in the South London suburb of Sydenham.
