Zusammenfassung: | Through much of its existence, Québec's neighbors called it the "priest-ridden province." Today, however, Québec society is staunchly secular, with a modern welfare state built on lay provision of social services--a transformation rooted in the "Quiet Revolution" of the 1960s. In Beheading the Saint, Geneviève Zubrzycki studies that transformation through a close investigation of the annual Feast of St. John the Baptist of June 24. The celebrations of that national holiday, she shows, provided a venue for a public contesting of the dominant ethno-Catholic conception of French Canadian identity and, via the violent rejection of Catholic symbols, the articulation of a new, secular Québécois identity. From there, Zubrzycki extends her analysis to the present, looking at the role of Québécois identity in recent debates over immigration, the place of religious symbols in the public sphere, and the politics of cultural heritage--issues that also offer insight on similar debates elsewhere in the world. |

From there, Zubrzycki extends her analysis to the present, looking at the role of Québécois identity in recent debates over immigration, the place of religious symbols in the public sphere, and the politics of cultural heritage--issues that also offer insight on similar debates elsewhere in the world.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Nationalism</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Secularism</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Church and state</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Parades</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">John the Baptist's Day</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Social change</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Nationalisme</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Église et État</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Défilés</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect politique</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Fête)</subfield><subfield code="z">Québec (Province)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Essays.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Government</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Government</subfield><subfield code="x">National.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Reference.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Church and state</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">John the Baptist's Day</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nationalism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Secularism</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Social change</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Québec</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRCQp8M3whjghQmqVPXM</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Quebec.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">St.Jean-Baptiste Holiday.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">national identity.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">nationalism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">secularism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Beheading the saint (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGm6wxr6grc7V9MBWwkhpP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Zubrzycki, Geneviève.</subfield><subfield code="t">Beheading the saint.</subfield><subfield code="d">Chicago ; Chicago ; London : The University of Chicago Press, 2016. 1 online resource text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index. Print version record. From French Canada to Québec: an introduction -- Making and unmaking of French-Canadianness. The iconic making of French-Canadianness -- Iconoclastic unmaking: the Quiet Revolution's aesthetic revolt (1959-69) -- Making and debating Québécois-ness. Iconographic remaking and the politics of identity: the ambiguous reinvention of the fête -- Nationalism, secularism, and cultural heritage -- Conclusion: toward a cultural sociology of identity transformation. Through much of its existence, Québec's neighbors called it the "priest-ridden province." Today, however, Québec society is staunchly secular, with a modern welfare state built on lay provision of social services--a transformation rooted in the "Quiet Revolution" of the 1960s.
