Zusammenfassung: | Will Saudi Arabia join the democratic wave in the Middle East? Despite being surrounded by states experiencing uprisings and revolutions, Saudi Arabia appears to be a "black hole" for democracy in the Middle East - secretive, highly repressive and still propped up by the West. The Islamic Utopia uses a range of sources including first-hand reporting and recently released WikiLeaks documents to examine Saudi Arabia in the decade after the 9/11 attacks, when King Abdullah's "reform" agenda took center state in public debate. It considers Saudi claims of "exemption" from the democratic demands of the Arab Spring. Andrew Hammond argues that for too long Western media and governments have accepted Saudi leaders' claims to be a buttress against Jihadist Islam and that a new policy is needed towards the House of Saud. -- Publisher description |

It considers Saudi claims of "exemption" from the democratic demands of the Arab Spring. Andrew Hammond argues that for too long Western media and governments have accepted Saudi leaders' claims to be a buttress against Jihadist Islam and that a new policy is needed towards the House of Saud. -- Publisher description</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">The religious society -- Government in the Sharia state -- The warrior king and his priests -- Segregated nation -- The illusion of reform -- Foreign policy adventurism: Iran and Palestine -- The Saudi Cordon Sanitaire in Arab media -- Controlling Mecca: in the House of God.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Saudi Arabia</subfield><subfield code="x">Politics and government.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004003457</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Regions & Countries</subfield><subfield code="x">Asia & the Middle East.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">History & Archaeology.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Middle East.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Arabie saoudite</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique et gouvernement.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="z">Middle East</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politics and government</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Saudi Arabia</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJxhjWXkTDX9PGTcmRhT73</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The Islamic utopia (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGP6ybddYBBBPYpRwRQpfq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="773" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="t">Academic Library</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Hammond, Andrew, 1970-</subfield><subfield code="t">Islamic utopia.</subfield><subfield code="d">London : Pluto ; New York : Distributed in the United States of America exclusively by Palgrave Macmillan, 2012</subfield><subfield code="z">9780745332703</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2012289127</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)819556971</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=501015</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH24461430</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH24461431</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">501015</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">15366434</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">9854568</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Online resource; title from PDF title page (JSTOR, viewed June 20, 2019). Will Saudi Arabia join the democratic wave in the Middle East? -- Publisher description The religious society -- Government in the Sharia state -- The warrior king and his priests -- Segregated nation -- The illusion of reform -- Foreign policy adventurism: Iran and Palestine -- The Saudi Cordon Sanitaire in Arab media -- Controlling Mecca: in the House of God.
