Zusammenfassung: | "Among the most well-known YouTubers are a cadre of talented Asian American performers, including comedian Ryan Higa and makeup artist Michelle Phan. Yet beneath the sheen of these online success stories lies a problem--Asian Americans remain sorely underrepresented in mainstream film and television. When they do appear on screen, they are often relegated to demeaning stereotypes such as the comical foreigner, the sexy girlfriend, or the martial arts villain. The story that remains untold is that as long as these inequities have existed, Asian Americans have been fighting back--joining together to protest offensive imagery, support Asian American actors and industry workers, and make their voices heard. Providing a cultural history and ethnography, Asian American Media Activism assesses everything from grassroots collectives in the 1970s up to contemporary engagements by fan groups, advertising agencies, and users on YouTube and Twitter. In linking these different forms of activism, Lori Kido Lopez investigates how Asian American media activism takes place and evaluates what kinds of interventions are most effective. Ultimately, Lopez finds that activists must be understood as fighting for cultural citizenship, a deeper sense of belonging and acceptance within a nation that has long rejected them"--Publisher description. |

Ultimately, Lopez finds that activists must be understood as fighting for cultural citizenship, a deeper sense of belonging and acceptance within a nation that has long rejected them"--Publisher description.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Asian Americans in mass media.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2015002934</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Ethnicity in mass media.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2012001725</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Racism in mass media.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh98006870</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mass media</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Américains d'origine asiatique dans les médias.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Ethnicité dans les médias.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Racisme dans les médias.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Médias</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PSYCHOLOGY</subfield><subfield code="x">Social Psychology.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Asian Americans in mass media</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethnicity in mass media</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mass media</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Racism in mass media</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">e-books.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Livres numériques.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvmgf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Asian American media activism (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFJd3cRqTjRYxKQdhBqXq3</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Lopez, Lori Kido.</subfield><subfield code="t">Asian American media activism.</subfield><subfield code="d">New York : New York University Press, [2016]</subfield><subfield code="z">9781479878192</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2015047144</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)926743482</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Critical cultural communication.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2010049984</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1084165</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH32943690</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse86798</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9781479835942</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Introduction : the role of Asian American media activism -- The limits of assimilationism within traditional media activism -- Leveraging media policy for representational change -- Social change through the Asian American market -- Asian American YouTube celebrities creating popular culture networks -- Utilizing skills and passion to spread online activism -- Conclusion : producing citizenship through activism. Print version record. "Among the most well-known YouTubers are a cadre of talented Asian American performers, including comedian Ryan Higa and makeup artist Michelle Phan.
