Zusammenfassung: | Liberation and Development: Black Consciousness Community Programs in South Africa is an account of the community development programs of the Black Consciousness movement in South Africa. It covers the emergence of the movement's ideas and practices in the context of the late 1960s and early 1970s, then analyzes how activists refined their practices, mobilized resources, and influenced people through their work. The book examines this history primarily through the Black Community Programs organization and its three major projects: the yearbook Black Review, the Zanempilo Community Health Center, and the Njwaxa leatherwork factory. As opposed to better-known studies of antipolitical, macroeconomic initiatives, this book shows that people from the so-called global South led development in innovative ways that promised to increase social and political participation. It particularly explores the power that youth, women, and churches had in leading change in a hostile political environment. With this new perspective on a major liberation movement, Hadfield not only causes us to rethink aspects of African history but also offers lessons from the past for African societies still dealing with developmental challenges similar to those faced during apartheid. |

It particularly explores the power that youth, women, and churches had in leading change in a hostile political environment. With this new perspective on a major liberation movement, Hadfield not only causes us to rethink aspects of African history but also offers lessons from the past for African societies still dealing with developmental challenges similar to those faced during apartheid.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Black Community Program (South Africa)</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">South African Students' Organisation</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Black Consciousness Movement of South Africa</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Black Community Program (South Africa)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Black Consciousness Movement of South Africa</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">South African Students' Organisation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Community development</subfield><subfield code="z">South Africa.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Economic development</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">South Africa.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Black people</subfield><subfield code="x">Race identity</subfield><subfield code="z">South Africa.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Développement communautaire</subfield><subfield code="z">Afrique du Sud.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Personnes noires</subfield><subfield code="x">Identité ethnique</subfield><subfield code="z">Afrique du Sud.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Black people</subfield><subfield code="x">Race identity</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Community development</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Economic development</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">South Africa</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJcWtkkqd3cMmFw9GBdYT3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Liberation and development (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFPqw6bDBWfhkhfyqQRtKd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="z">9781611861921</subfield><subfield code="z">1611861926</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2015022464</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)912140593</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African history and culture.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1444769</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="936" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">BATCHLOAD</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH30723375</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH30719012</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Introduction -- The emergence of Black Consciousness ideas on development -- Refining practices and mobilizing resources -- Black Review -- The Zanempilo Community Health Center -- The Njwaxa leather-work factory -- Conclusion. Print version record. Liberation and Development: Black Consciousness Community Programs in South Africa is an account of the community development programs of the Black Consciousness movement in South Africa.
