Zusammenfassung: | Sun Ra said he came from Saturn. Known on earth for his inventive music and extravagant stage shows, he pioneered free-form improvisation in an ensemble setting with the devoted band he called the "Arkestra." Sun Ra took jazz from the inner city to outer space, infusing traditional swing with far-out harmonies, rhythms, and sounds. Described as the father of Afrofuturism, Sun Ra created "space music" as a means of building a better future for American blacks here on earth. This is a spirited introduction to the life and work of this legendary but underappreciated musician, composer, and poet. Paul Youngquist explores and assesses Sun Ra's wide-ranging creative output-music, public preaching, graphic design, film and stage performance, and poetry-and connects his diverse undertakings to the culture and politics of his times, including the space race, the rise of technocracy, the civil rights movement, and even space-age bachelor-pad music. By thoroughly examining the astro-black mythology that Sun Ra espoused, Youngquist masterfully demonstrates that he offered both a holistic response to a planet desperately in need of new visions and vibrations and a new kind of political activism that used popular culture to advance social change. In a nation obsessed with space and confused about race, Sun Ra aimed not just at assimilation for the socially disfranchised but even more at a wholesale transformation of American society and a more creative, egalitarian world. |

In a nation obsessed with space and confused about race, Sun Ra aimed not just at assimilation for the socially disfranchised but even more at a wholesale transformation of American society and a more creative, egalitarian world.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Sun Ra.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88607003</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sun Ra</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJpDKTXBfjFJh79ffGF9Xd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Afrofuturism.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2018002914</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jazz musicians</subfield><subfield code="v">Biography.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jazz</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Musiciens de jazz</subfield><subfield code="v">Biographies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Afrofuturisme.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Afrofuturist.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY</subfield><subfield code="x">Composers & Musicians.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">MUSIC</subfield><subfield code="x">Instruction & Study</subfield><subfield code="x">Theory.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">MUSIC / Individual Composer & Musician</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Afrofuturism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Jazz</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Jazz musicians</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Biography</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D019215</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies.</subfield><subfield code="2">lcgft</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026049</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvmgf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">A pure solar world (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGQQJpPTCHJDXw8W8t6wcq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Youngquist, Paul.</subfield><subfield code="t">Pure solar world.</subfield><subfield code="d">Austin : University of Texas Press, 2016</subfield><subfield code="z">9780292726369</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2016005943</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)940342184</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Discovering America series.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011149076</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1346883</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Sun Ra said he came from Saturn.
