Zusammenfassung: | Human embryo research touches upon strongly felt moral convictions, and it raises such deep questions about the promise and perils of scientific progress that debate over its development has become a moral and political imperative. From in vitro fertilization to embryonic stem cell research, cloning, and gene editing, Americans have repeatedly struggled with how to define the moral status of the human embryo, whether to limit its experimental uses, and how to contend with sharply divided public moral perspectives on governing science. Experiments in Democracy presents a history of American debates over human embryo research from the late 1960s to the present, exploring their crucial role in shaping norms, practices, and institutions of deliberation governing the ethical challenges of modern bioscience. J. Benjamin Hurlbut details how scientists, bioethicists, policymakers, and other public figures have attempted to answer a question of great consequence: how should the public reason about aspects of science and technology that effect fundamental dimensions of human life' Through a study of one of the most significant science policy controversies in the history of the United States, Experiments in Democracy paints a portrait of the complex relationship between science and democracy, and of U.S. society's evolving approaches to evaluating and governing science's most challenging breakthroughs. |

J. Benjamin Hurlbut details how scientists, bioethicists, policymakers, and other public figures have attempted to answer a question of great consequence: how should the public reason about aspects of science and technology that effect fundamental dimensions of human life' Through a study of one of the most significant science policy controversies in the history of the United States, Experiments in Democracy paints a portrait of the complex relationship between science and democracy, and of U.S. society's evolving approaches to evaluating and governing science's most challenging breakthroughs.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Introduction: the politics of experiment -- New beginnings -- Producing life -- Representing reason -- Cloning, knowledge, and the politics of consensus -- Confusing deliberation -- In the laboratories of democracy -- Religion, reason, and the politics of progress -- The legacy of experiment.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">In English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Human embryo</subfield><subfield code="x">Research</subfield><subfield code="x">Government policy</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Stem cells</subfield><subfield code="x">Research</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Embryo Research</subfield><subfield code="x">ethics</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Stem Cell Research</subfield><subfield code="x">ethics</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Embryon humain</subfield><subfield code="x">Recherche</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique gouvernementale</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Cellules souches</subfield><subfield code="x">Recherche</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect moral</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">MEDICAL</subfield><subfield code="x">Physiology.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Life Sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Human Anatomy & Physiology.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Stem cells</subfield><subfield code="x">Research</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield><subfield code="2">lcgft</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Experiments in democracy (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGbcHkQpbGHQwr6kCJ4HFq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Hurlbut, J. New York : Columbia University Press, [2017] 1 online resource (xiii, 359 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Columbia scholarship online Includes bibliographical references and index. Print version. Human embryo research touches upon strongly felt moral convictions, and it raises such deep questions about the promise and perils of scientific progress that debate over its development has become a moral and political imperative.
