Zusammenfassung: | The Politics of Suffering examines the confluence of international aid, humanitarian relief, and economic development within the space of the Palestinian refugee camp. Nell Gabiam describes the interactions between UNRWA, the United Nations agency charged with providing assistance to Palestinians since the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, and residents of three camps in Syria. Over time, UNRWA's management of the camps reveals a shift from an emphasis on humanitarian aid to promotion of self-sufficiency and integration of refugees within their host society. Gabiam's analysis captures two forces in tension within the camps: politics of suffering that serves to keep alive the discourse around the Palestinian right of return; and politics of citizenship expressed through development projects that seek to close the divide between the camp and the city. Gabiam offers compelling insights into the plight of Palestinians before and during the Syrian war, which has led to devastation in the camps and massive displacement of their populations. |

Gabiam offers compelling insights into the plight of Palestinians before and during the Syrian war, which has led to devastation in the camps and massive displacement of their populations.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="g">Machine generated contents note:</subfield><subfield code="g">1.</subfield><subfield code="t">Informal Citizens: Palestinian Refugees in Syria --</subfield><subfield code="g">2.</subfield><subfield code="t">From Humanitarianism to Development: unrwa and Palestinian Refugees --</subfield><subfield code="g">3.</subfield><subfield code="t">Sumud and Sustainability: Reinterpreting Development in Palestinian Refugee Camps --</subfield><subfield code="g">4.</subfield><subfield code="t">"Must We Live in Barracks to Convince People We Are Refugees?": The Politics of Camp Improvement --</subfield><subfield code="g">5.</subfield><subfield code="t">"A Camp Is a Feeling Inside": Urbanization and the Boundaries of Palestinian Refugee Identity.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Refugees, Palestinian Arab</subfield><subfield code="z">Syria.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Refugee camps</subfield><subfield code="z">Syria.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Réfugiés palestiniens</subfield><subfield code="z">Syrie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Camps de réfugiés</subfield><subfield code="z">Syrie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Social Security.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Social Services & Welfare.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Anthropology</subfield><subfield code="x">Cultural.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Refugee camps</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Refugees, Palestinian Arab</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Syria</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRrbPWVQ3tvhM9q9jX7B</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Flüchtlingslager</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Palästinenser</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Syrien</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The politics of suffering (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGcVgtFytxdDWcyPTDcYrm</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Gabiam, Nell.</subfield><subfield code="t">Politics of suffering.</subfield><subfield code="d">Bloomington : Indiana University Press, [2016]</subfield><subfield code="z">9780253021281</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2015050921</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)921167280</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Public cultures of the Middle East and North Africa.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2010120307</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1237601</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">hoopla Digital</subfield><subfield code="b">HOPL</subfield><subfield code="n">MWT14823122</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH38341858</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Bloomington : Indiana University Press, [2016] 1 online resource text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Public cultures of the Middle East and North Africa Includes bibliographical references and index. Print version record. The Politics of Suffering examines the confluence of international aid, humanitarian relief, and economic development within the space of the Palestinian refugee camp.
