Zusammenfassung: | Suddenly, the Sight of War is a genealogy of Hebrew poetry written in pre-state Israel between the beginning of World War II and the War of Independence in 1948. In it, renowned literary scholar Hannan Hever sheds light on how the views and poetic practices of poets changed as they became aware of the extreme violence in Europe toward the Jews. In dealing with the difficult topics of the Shoah, Natan Alterman's 1944 publication of The Poems of the Ten Plagues proved pivotal. His work inspired the next generation of poets like Haim Guri, as well as detractors like Amir Gilboa. Suddenly, the Sight of War also explores the relations between the poetry of the struggle for national independence and the genre of war-reportage, uniquely prevalent at the time. Hever concludes his genealogy with a focus on the feminine reaction to the War of Independence showing how women writers such as Lea Goldberg and Yocheved Bat-Miryam subverted war poetry at the end of the 1940s. Through the work of these remarkable poets, we learn how a culture transcended seemingly unspeakable violence. |

Through the work of these remarkable poets, we learn how a culture transcended seemingly unspeakable violence.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Israeli poetry</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Violence in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85143523</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Nationalism in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85090160</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Symbolism in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85131419</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">War in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85145182</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Poésie israélienne</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire et critique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Violence dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Nationalisme dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Symbolisme dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Guerre dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LITERARY CRITICISM</subfield><subfield code="x">African.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LITERARY CRITICISM</subfield><subfield code="x">Jewish.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Israeli poetry</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nationalism in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Symbolism in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Violence in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">War in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Suddenly, the sight of war (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCH4Ppm3kWk8DxJxcQ6crRq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Hever, Hannan.</subfield><subfield code="s">Pitʼom marʼeh ha-milḥamah. Suddenly, the Sight of War is a genealogy of Hebrew poetry written in pre-state Israel between the beginning of World War II and the War of Independence in 1948.
