Zusammenfassung: | "In 1964, noted literary critic Leslie Fiedler described American youth as 'new mutants, ' social rebels severing their attachments to American culture to remake themselves in their own image. 1960s comic book creators, anticipating Fiedler, began to morph American superheroes from icons of nationalism and white masculinity into actual mutant outcasts, defined by their genetic difference from ordinary humanity. These powerful misfits and 'freaks' soon came to embody the social and political aspirations of America's most marginalized groups, including women, racial and sexual minorities, and the working classes. In The New Mutants, Ramzi Fawaz draws upon queer theory to tell the story of these monstrous fantasy figures and how they grapple with radical politics from Civil Rights and The New Left to Women's and Gay Liberation Movements. Through a series of comic book case studies -- including The Justice League of America, The Fantastic Four, The X-Men, and The New Mutants -- alongside late 20th century fan writing, cultural criticism, and political documents, Fawaz reveals how the American superhero modeled new forms of social belonging that counterculture youth would embrace in the 1960s and after. The New Mutants provides the first full-length study to consider the relationship between comic book fantasy and radical politics in the modern United States."--Publisher's description |

The New Mutants provides the first full-length study to consider the relationship between comic book fantasy and radical politics in the modern United States."--Publisher's description</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Umschulungswerkstätten für Siedler und Auswanderer</subfield><subfield code="g">Bitterfeld</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Comic books, strips, etc.</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Superheroes in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010012141</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Superhéros dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">Techniques</subfield><subfield code="x">Drawing.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Comic books, strips, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Superheroes in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Comic</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Superheld</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4291285-4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Fawaz, Ramzi.</subfield><subfield code="t">New mutants.</subfield><subfield code="d">New York ; London : New York University Press, [2016]</subfield><subfield code="z">9781479814336</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2015021427</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)910802482</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Postmillennial pop.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2013000131</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1020851</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH30328782</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH31424857</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9781479840021</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL4004155</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">1020851</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse86978</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Oxford University Press USA</subfield><subfield code="b">OUPR</subfield><subfield code="n">EDZ0001533337</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">12815736</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

"In 1964, noted literary critic Leslie Fiedler described American youth as 'new mutants, ' social rebels severing their attachments to American culture to remake themselves in their own image.
