Zusammenfassung: | Earlier empirical studies on valency have looked at the phenomenon either in individual languages or a small range of languages, or have concerned themselves with only small subparts of valency (e.g. transitivity, ditransitive constructions), leaving a lacuna that the present volume aims to fill by considering a wide range of valency phenomena across 30 languages from different parts of the world. The individual-language studies, each written by a specialist or group of specialists on that language and covering both valency patterns and valency alternations, are based on a questionnaire (reproduced in the volume) and an on-line freely accessible database, thus guaranteeing comparability of cross-linguistic results. In addition, introductory chapters provide the background to the project and discuss its main characteristics and selected results, while a series of featured articles by leading scholars who helped shape the field provide an outside perspective on the volume's approach. The volume is essential reading for anyone interested in valency and argument structure, irrespective of theoretical persuasion, and will serve as a model for future descriptive studies of valency in individual languages. |

The volume is essential reading for anyone interested in valency and argument structure, irrespective of theoretical persuasion, and will serve as a model for future descriptive studies of valency in individual languages.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">In English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Dependency grammar</subfield><subfield code="v">Case studies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Language and languages</subfield><subfield code="x">Dependency grammar</subfield><subfield code="v">Case studies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Language and languages</subfield><subfield code="v">Case studies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Grammar, Comparative and general</subfield><subfield code="x">Transitivity.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056343</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Grammar, Comparative and general</subfield><subfield code="x">Case.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056271</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Contrastive linguistics</subfield><subfield code="v">Case studies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Grammaire de dépendance</subfield><subfield code="v">Études de cas.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Langage et langues</subfield><subfield code="x">Grammaire de dépendance</subfield><subfield code="v">Études de cas.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Langage et langues</subfield><subfield code="v">Études de cas.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Transitivité (Linguistique)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Cas (Linguistique)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Linguistique contrastive</subfield><subfield code="v">Études de cas.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">Grammar & Punctuation.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">Linguistics</subfield><subfield code="x">Syntax.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Contrastive linguistics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Dependency grammar</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Grammar, Comparative and general</subfield><subfield code="x">Case</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Grammar, Comparative and general</subfield><subfield code="x">Transitivity</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Language and languages</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Valency, Verb Classes, Argument Alternations.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Case studies</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Malʹchukov, A. Earlier empirical studies on valency have looked at the phenomenon either in individual languages or a small range of languages, or have concerned themselves with only small subparts of valency (e.g. transitivity, ditransitive constructions), leaving a lacuna that the present volume aims to fill by considering a wide range of valency phenomena across 30 languages from different parts of the world.
