Zusammenfassung: | Written and directed by two white men and performed by an all-black cast, Nothing But a Man (Michael Roemer, 1964) tells the story of a drifter turned family man who struggles with the pressures of small-town life and the limitations placed on him and his community in the Deep South, an area long fraught with racism. Though unmistakably about race and civil rights, the film makes no direct reference to the civil rights movement. Despite this intentional absence, contemporary audiences were acutely aware of the social context for the film's indictment of white prejudice in America. To help frame and situate the film in the context of black film studies, the book gathers primary and secondary resources, including the original screenplay, essays on the film, statements by the filmmakers, and interviews with Robert M. Young, the film's producer and cinematographer, and Khalil Gibran Muhammad, the Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. |

Young, the film's producer and cinematographer, and Khalil Gibran Muhammad, the Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="630" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Nothing but a man (Motion picture)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2015032910</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="630" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nothing but a man (Motion picture)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African Americans in motion pictures.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85002011</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Race relations in motion pictures.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh92001871</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Noirs américains au cinéma.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Relations raciales au cinéma.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PERFORMING ARTS</subfield><subfield code="x">Reference.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PERFORMING ARTS</subfield><subfield code="x">Film & Video</subfield><subfield code="x">History & Criticism.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">African Americans in motion pictures</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Race relations in motion pictures</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Martin, Michael T.,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Wall, David C.,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The politics and poetics of black film (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PD3xcVMmt9qDXFMp3bwdgmm</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Politics and poetics of black film.</subfield><subfield code="d">Bloomington : Indiana University Press, 2015</subfield><subfield code="z">0253018374</subfield><subfield code="z">9780253018373</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)908990321</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Studies in the cinema of the Black diaspora.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2016057044</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1071130</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL4004136</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">1071130</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse49276</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">12620797</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Written and directed by two white men and performed by an all-black cast, Nothing But a Man (Michael Roemer, 1964) tells the story of a drifter turned family man who struggles with the pressures of small-town life and the limitations placed on him and his community in the Deep South, an area long fraught with racism.
