Zusammenfassung: | The idea that human history is approaching a 'singularity' - that ordinary humans will someday be overtaken by artificially intelligent machines or cognitively-enhanced biological intelligence, or both - has moved from the realm of science fiction to serious debate. Some singularity theorists predict that if the field of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to develop at its current dizzying rate, the singularity could come about in the middle of the present century. The author offers an introduction to the idea of the singularity and considers the ramifications of such a potentially seismic event. The author's aim is not to make predictions but rather to investigate a range of scenarios. Whether one believes that singularity is near or far, likely or impossible, apocalypse or utopia, the very idea raises crucial philosophical and pragmatic questions. The author considers what the existence of superintelligent machines could mean for such matters as personhood, responsibility, rights, and identity. The singularity presents both an existential threat to humanity and an existential opportunity for humanity to transcend its limitations. The author makes it clear that people need to imagine both possibilities if they want to bring about the better outcome.--adapted from publisher's description. |

The author considers what the existence of superintelligent machines could mean for such matters as personhood, responsibility, rights, and identity. The singularity presents both an existential threat to humanity and an existential opportunity for humanity to transcend its limitations. The author makes it clear that people need to imagine both possibilities if they want to bring about the better outcome.--adapted from publisher's description.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Artificial intelligence</subfield><subfield code="x">Forecasting.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Artificial intelligence</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Technology</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85133169</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Conscious automata.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85031234</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Brain</subfield><subfield code="x">Computer simulation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Intelligence artificielle</subfield><subfield code="x">Prévision.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Intelligence artificielle</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect psychologique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Machines intelligentes.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Cerveau</subfield><subfield code="x">Simulation par ordinateur.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">COMPUTERS</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">COMPUTERS</subfield><subfield code="x">Intelligence (AI) & Semantics.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Artificial intelligence</subfield><subfield code="x">Forecasting</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Brain</subfield><subfield code="x">Computer simulation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Conscious automata</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Technology</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">COGNITIVE SCIENCES/General</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">COMPUTER SCIENCE/Artificial Intelligence</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Shanahan, Murray.</subfield><subfield code="t">Technological singularity</subfield><subfield code="z">9780262527804</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2015000997</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)900332365</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">MIT Press essential knowledge series.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011178343</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1051060</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH37531350</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH33866861</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">32349901</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - The idea that human history is approaching a 'singularity' - that ordinary humans will someday be overtaken by artificially intelligent machines or cognitively-enhanced biological intelligence, or both - has moved from the realm of science fiction to serious debate. Artificial intelligence Forecasting.
