Zusammenfassung: | Departing from the traditional German school of music theorists, Michael Klein injects a unique French critical theory perspective into the framework of music and meaning. Using primarily Lacanian notions of the symptom, that unnamable jouissance located in the unconscious, and the registers of subjectivity (the Imaginary, the Symbolic Order, and the Real), Klein explores how we understand music as both an artistic form created by "the subject" and an artistic expression of a culture that imposes its history on this modern subject. By creatively navigating from critical theory to music, film, fiction, and back to music, Klein distills the kinds of meaning that we have been missing when we perform, listen to, think about, and write about music without the insights of Lacan and others into formulations of modern subjectivity. |

By creatively navigating from critical theory to music, film, fiction, and back to music, Klein distills the kinds of meaning that we have been missing when we perform, listen to, think about, and write about music without the insights of Lacan and others into formulations of modern subjectivity.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="504" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Includes bibliographical references and index.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Lacan, Jacques,</subfield><subfield code="d">1901-1981</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Lacan, Jacques,</subfield><subfield code="d">1901-1981</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJr3v684f4qtydVVBBBkjC</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Music</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85088812</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Music</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy and aesthetics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85088808</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Musical analysis.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85088952</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Musique</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect psychologique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Musique</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophie et esthétique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Analyse musicale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">MUSIC</subfield><subfield code="x">Instruction & Study</subfield><subfield code="x">Theory.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Music</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy and aesthetics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Music</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Musical analysis</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Music and the crises of the modern subject (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGxhgWwQGQphJdDryVyRgC</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Erscheint auch als:</subfield><subfield code="n">Druck-Ausgabe</subfield><subfield code="t">Klein, Michael L. Music and the symptom -- The acoustic mirror as formative of auditory pleasure and fantasy : Chopin's Berceuse, Brahms's Romanze, and Saariaho's "Parfum de l'instant" -- Debussy and the three machines of the Proustian narrative -- Chopin dreams : the Mazurka in C♯ minor as sinthome -- Intermezzo : on agency -- Postmodern quotation, the signifying chain, and the erasure of history -- Lutoslawski, molar and molecular. Departing from the traditional German school of music theorists, Michael Klein injects a unique French critical theory perspective into the framework of music and meaning.
