Zusammenfassung: | In this revisionist account of France's crushing defeat in 1940, a world authority on French history argues that the nation's downfall has long been misunderstood. Philip Nord assesses France's diplomatic and military preparations for war with Germany, its conduct of the war once the fighting began, and the political consequences of defeat on the battlefield. He also tracks attitudes among French leaders once defeat seemed a likelihood, identifying who among them took advantage of the nation's misfortunes to sabotage democratic institutions and plot an authoritarian way forward. Nord finds that the longstanding view that France's collapse was due to military unpreparedeness and a decadent national character is unsupported by fact. Â Instead, he reveals that the Third Republic was no worse prepared and its military failings no less dramatic than those of the United States and other Allies in the early years of the war. What was unique in France was the betrayal by military and political elites who abandoned the Republic and supported the reprehensible Vichy takeover. Why then have historians and politicians ever since interpreted the defeat as a judgment on the nation as a whole? Why has the focus been on the failings of the Third Republic and not on elite betrayal? The author examines these questions in a fascinating conclusion.-- In this revisionist account of France's crushing defeat in 1940, a world authority on French history argues that the nation's downfall has long been misunderstood. The author examines these questions in a fascinating conclusion.--</subfield><subfield code="c">Provided by Publisher.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">World War, 1939-1945</subfield><subfield code="x">Campaigns</subfield><subfield code="z">France.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85148318</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Guerre mondiale, 1939-1945</subfield><subfield code="x">Campagnes et batailles</subfield><subfield code="z">France.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">Western.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Military campaigns</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">France</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJd8gD4vdtqQMdQHvYqbBP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Westfeldzug</subfield><subfield code="g">1940</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4130755-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Niederlage</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4291333-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Frankreich</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="647" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">World War</subfield><subfield code="d">(1939-1945)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39Qhp4vBbhpRH9XvjbDFXtxhb</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1939-1945</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">France 1940 (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCH6KwTW76p3ym8CfgJRV83</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Nord, Philip G., 1950-</subfield><subfield code="t">France 1940</subfield><subfield code="z">9780300189872</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2014047023</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)890614565</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=960164</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">CBO01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=960164</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH28334761</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">31064361</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780300190687</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3421575</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr11027537</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">960164</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">12321557</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

New Haven : Yale University Press, 2015. 1 online resource text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index. Print version record. Introduction: Strange defeat? -- Diplomacy -- Armaments and morale -- Battle plans -- Lightning war -- Armistice -- The road to Vichy -- Conclusion: The 1940 syndrome. In this revisionist account of France's crushing defeat in 1940, a world authority on French history argues that the nation's downfall has long been misunderstood. The author examines these questions in a fascinating conclusion.-- Provided by Publisher.
