Zusammenfassung: | In just over a hundred years -- from the death of Muhammad in 632 to the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate in 750 -- the followers of the Prophet swept across the whole of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. Their armies threatened states as far flung as the Franks in Western Europe and the Tang Empire in China. The conquered territory was larger than the Roman Empire at its greatest expansion, and it was claimed for the Arabs in roughly half the time. How this collection of Arabian tribes was able to engulf so many empires, states, and armies in such a short period has perplexed historians for centuries. Most accounts of the Arab invasions have been based almost solely on the early Muslim sources, which were composed centuries later to illustrate the divinely chosen status of the Arabs. Robert Hoyland's groundbreaking new history assimilates not only the rich biographical information of the early Muslim sources but also the many non-Arabic sources, contemporaneous or near-contemporaneous with the conquests. In God's Path begins with a broad picture of the Late Antique world prior to the Prophet's arrival, a world dominated by two superpowers: Byzantium and Sasanian Persia. In between these empires, emerged a distinct Arabian identity, which helped forge the inhabitants of western Arabia into a formidable fighting force. The Arabs are the principal actors in this drama yet, as Hoyland shows, the peoples along the edges of Byzantium and Persia -- the Khazars, Bulgars, Avars, and Turks -- all played critical roles in the remaking of the old world order. The new faith propagated by Muhammad and his successors made it possible for many of the conquered peoples to join the Arabs in creating the first Islamic Empire. |

The new faith propagated by Muhammad and his successors made it possible for many of the conquered peoples to join the Arabs in creating the first Islamic Empire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCOhost, viewed January 7, 2021).</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Islamic Empire</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">622-661.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85068447</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Islamic Empire</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">661-750.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85068448</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Empire islamique</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">622-661.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Empire islamique</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">661-750.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">World.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Islamic Empire</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">622-750</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">In God's path (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGfYyX9XfCbvMCHMQCWcvb</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Hoyland, Robert G., 1966-</subfield><subfield code="t">In God's path.</subfield><subfield code="d">New York, NY : Oxford University Press, [2015]</subfield><subfield code="z">9780199916368</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2013043047</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)863381694</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Ancient warfare and civilization.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011081076</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="966" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">DE-862</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=864683</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="966" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">DE-863</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=864683</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">eLibro</subfield><subfield code="b">ELBO</subfield><subfield code="n">ELB163230</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">29890507</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL1789284</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10952681</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">864683</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">cis29890507</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">ingodspatharabco0000hoyl</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-862</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

The setting -- AD 630-40 the first battles -- AD 640-52 eastwards and westwards -- AD 652-90 the fight for Byzantium -- AD 690-715 the great leap forward -- AD 715-50 retrenchment and revolt -- The making of islamic civilization -- Chroniclers of the conquests and some source critical remarks. In just over a hundred years -- from the death of Muhammad in 632 to the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate in 750 -- the followers of the Prophet swept across the whole of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain.
