Zusammenfassung: | Traces the dynamic relationship between film and city. How are the political possibilities of film related to urban space? What are the ethical implications of representing urban space on film? How does the use of urban space help to theorise film? Film and Urban Space: Critical Possibilities traces recurring debates about what constitutes film's political potential and argues that the relation between film and urban space has been crucial to these debates and their historical transformations. The book demonstrates that in the attempt to follow certain prescriptions -- shooting on location, disrupting normalizing time, experimenting with memory, interlinking the spaces of screen and cinema -- films invariably use the relation between film and urban space as a kind of laboratory, testing anew received prescriptions but invariably encountering new opportunities and new limits. A wide range of key films, from Dziga Vertov's 1929 Man with a Movie Camera to Jia Zhangke's 2008 24 City, are discussed in depth, each offering an argument for how the encounter between specific manifestations of modern urban space and politically engaged film strategies has served to challenge the status quo and stimulate critical thinking. An insightful and thought-provoking read, Film and Urban Space: Critical Possibilities presents scholars and advanced students in Film Studies with a compelling argument for the impact of urban space in creating film's critical political and ethical possibilities. |

An insightful and thought-provoking read, Film and Urban Space: Critical Possibilities presents scholars and advanced students in Film Studies with a compelling argument for the impact of urban space in creating film's critical political and ethical possibilities.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">City and town life in motion pictures.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85026257</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Cities and towns in motion pictures.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85026189</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Vie urbaine au cinéma.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Villes au cinéma.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Films, cinema.</subfield><subfield code="2">bicssc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PERFORMING ARTS</subfield><subfield code="x">Reference.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PERFORMING ARTS</subfield><subfield code="x">Film & Video</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Cities and towns in motion pictures</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">City and town life in motion pictures</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">San Juan, Rose Marie,</subfield><subfield code="e">author.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2001028735</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Film and urban space (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGdbYjKvY7fxM7j6MyKkrC</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Pratt, Geraldine.</subfield><subfield code="t">Film and urban space.</subfield><subfield code="d">Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press, [2014]</subfield><subfield code="z">9780748623846</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2014427720</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)879398940</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=830661</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH27242880</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">28864062</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL1767545</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10909839</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">830661</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">cis28864062</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">12035911</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

The view from the street : the politics of shooting on location -- Movement and the street : the potential of cinematic time -- Remembering to forget to remember : the persistence of memory and the cinematic city -- Cinema and its publics : between the screen and the street. Traces the dynamic relationship between film and city.
