Zusammenfassung: | Biological weapons have threatened US national security since at least World War II. Historically, however, the US military has neglected research, development, acquisition, and doctrine for biodefense. Following September 11 and the anthrax letters of 2001, the United States started spending billions of dollars per year on medical countermeasures and biological detection systems. But most of this funding now comes from the Department of Health and Human Services rather than the Department of Defense. Why has the US military neglected biodefense and allowed civilian organizations to take the lead in defending the country against biological attacks? In American Biodefense, Frank L. Smith III addresses this puzzling and largely untold story about science, technology, and national security. Smith argues that organizational frames and stereotypes have caused both military neglect and the rise of civilian biodefense. In the armed services, influential ideas about kinetic warfare have undermined defense against biological warfare. The influence of these ideas on science and technology challenges the conventional wisdom that national security policy is driven by theats or bureaucratic interests. Given the ideas at work inside the US military, Smith explains how the lessons learned from biodefense can help solve other important problems that range from radiation weapons to cyber attacks--Front jacket flap. |

Given the ideas at work inside the US military, Smith explains how the lessons learned from biodefense can help solve other important problems that range from radiation weapons to cyber attacks--Front jacket flap.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Biological warfare</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Safety measures.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Biosecurity</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">National security</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140387</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Civil defense</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85139930</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Guerre biologique</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Sécurité</subfield><subfield code="x">Mesures.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Biosécurité</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING</subfield><subfield code="x">Military Science.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Security (National & International)</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biological warfare</subfield><subfield code="x">Safety measures</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biosecurity</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Civil defense</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">National security</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biologisk krigföring.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biosäkerhet.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Säkerhetspolitik.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Civilt försvar.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">bioterrorism, biological warfare, weapons of mass destruction, kinetic warfare.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">American biodefense (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFFDx8xYKxX7C8DdTChBvb</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Smith, Frank L., III, 1978-</subfield><subfield code="t">American biodefense.</subfield><subfield code="d">Ithaca : Cornell University Press, 2014</subfield><subfield code="z">9780801452710</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2014006183</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Cornell studies in security affairs.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=818926</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">hoopla Digital</subfield><subfield code="b">HOPL</subfield><subfield code="n">MWT12426937</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780801455162</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher. Biological weapons have threatened US national security since at least World War II.
