Zusammenfassung: | What is the nature of the relationship between the Hollywood Western and American frontier mythology? How have Western films helped develop cultural and historical perceptions, attitudes and beliefs towards the frontier? Is there still a place for the genre in light of revisionist histories of the American West? Myth of the Western re-invigorates the debate surrounding the relationship between the Western and frontier mythology, arguing for the importance of the genre's socio-cultural, historical and political dimensions. Taking a number of critical-theoretical and philosophical approaches, Matthew Carter applies them to prominent forms of frontier historiography. He also considers the historiographic element of the Western by exploring the different ways in which the genre has responded to the issues raised by the frontier. Carter skilfully argues that the genre has - and continues to reveal - the complexities and contradictions at the heart of US society. With its clear analyses of and intellectual challenges to the film scholarship that has developed around the Western over a 65-year period, this book adds new depth to our understanding of specific film texts and of the genre as a whole - a welcome resource for students and scholars in both Film Studies and American Studies. |

With its clear analyses of and intellectual challenges to the film scholarship that has developed around the Western over a 65-year period, this book adds new depth to our understanding of specific film texts and of the genre as a whole - a welcome resource for students and scholars in both Film Studies and American Studies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Western films</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Myth</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Westerns</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire et critique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mythe</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">24.32 history of film art.</subfield><subfield code="0">(NL-LeOCL)077601394</subfield><subfield code="2">bcl</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PERFORMING ARTS</subfield><subfield code="x">Reference.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PERFORMING ARTS</subfield><subfield code="x">Film & Video</subfield><subfield code="x">Reference.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Western films</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Western</subfield><subfield code="g">Film</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4132716-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Los Angeles- Hollywood</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4099817-4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Verenigde Staten.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Western films</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield><subfield code="2">nli</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Myth</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield><subfield code="2">nli</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Västernfilm.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Förenta staterna.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Myth of the Western (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCH8K9wGFdrV9bbG8x4HGf3</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Carter, Matthew (Teacher).</subfield><subfield code="t">Myth of the Western.</subfield><subfield code="d">Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press, 2014</subfield><subfield code="z">9780748685585</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)880787198</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=783908</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH29852889</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press, [2014]. ©2014 1 online resource (vii, 246 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Print version record. Includes bibliographical references and index. Introduction -- Part one. A good man with a gun -- A fine good place to be -- Rethinking revisionism -- Part two. What counts as history and whose history is it? -- Actors transcending the darkness -- Conclusion. What is the nature of the relationship between the Hollywood Western and American frontier mythology?
