Zusammenfassung: | "More than 2 decades have passed since the 1990-1991 conflict in the Persian Gulf. During the intervening years, many Gulf War veterans have experienced various unexplained symptoms that many associate with service in the gulf region, but no specific exposure has been definitively associated with symptoms. Numerous researchers have described the pattern of signs and symptoms found in deployed Gulf War veterans and noted that they report unexplained symptoms at higher rates than nondeployed veterans or veterans deployed elsewhere during the same period. Gulf War veterans have consistently shown a higher level of morbidity than the nondeployed, in some cases with severe and debilitating consequences. However, efforts to define a unique illness or syndrome in Gulf War veterans have failed, as have attempts to develop a uniformly accepted case definition. Chronic Multisymptom Illness in Gulf War Veterans is a comprehensive review of the available scientific and medical literature regarding symptoms for chronic multisymptom illness (CMI) among the 1991 Gulf War Veterans. This report evaluates and summarizes the literature in an effort to identify appropriate terminology to use in referring to CMI in Gulf War Veterans. While the report does not recommend one specific case definition over another, Chronic Multisymptom Illness in Gulf War Veterans does recommend the consideration of two case definitions on the basis of their concordance with the evidence and their ability to identify specific symptoms commonly reported by Gulf War veterans. This report recommends that the Department of Veterans Affairs use the term Gulf War illness rather than CMI. The report recommends that that the Department of Veterans Affairs, to the extent possible, systematically assess existing data to identify additional features of Gulf War illness, such as onset, duration, severity, frequency of symptoms, and exclusionary criteria to produce a more robust case definition"--Publisher's description |

have passed since the 1990-1991 conflict in the Persian Gulf. The report recommends that that the Department of Veterans Affairs, to the extent possible, systematically assess existing data to identify additional features of Gulf War illness, such as onset, duration, severity, frequency of symptoms, and exclusionary criteria to produce a more robust case definition"--Publisher's description</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="504" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Includes bibliographical references.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Introduction -- Case definitions -- Studies of symptoms in Gulf War veterans -- Factor analysis and its use in studies of symptoms in Gulf War veterans -- Chronic multisymptom illness case definitions and recommendations -- Additional information about factor analysis and cluster analysis -- Percentages of veterans reporting symptoms in studies of Gulf War veterans and military personnel.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Online resource; title from resource home page (National Academies Press, viewed on June 5, 2014).</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Persian Gulf War, 1991</subfield><subfield code="x">Veterans</subfield><subfield code="x">Medical care</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Cohort analysis.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85027772</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Factor analysis.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85046817</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Persian Gulf Syndrome</subfield><subfield code="x">diagnosis</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Symptom Assessment</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Cohort Studies</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Factor Analysis, Statistical</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Research Report</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Guerre du golfe Persique, 1991</subfield><subfield code="x">Anciens combattants</subfield><subfield code="x">Soins médicaux</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Analyse par cohorte.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Analyse factorielle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="z">Middle East</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Factor analysis</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Cohort analysis</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Veterans</subfield><subfield code="x">Medical care</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="647" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Persian Gulf War</subfield><subfield code="d">(1991)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39Qhp4vBbhpYvtywMDH9CxYwK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1991</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Gulf War illness</subfield><subfield code="a">chronic multisymptom illness</subfield><subfield code="a">CMI</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Review</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Institute of Medicine (U.S.). The report recommends that that the Department of Veterans Affairs, to the extent possible, systematically assess existing data to identify additional features of Gulf War illness, such as onset, duration, severity, frequency of symptoms, and exclusionary criteria to produce a more robust case definition"--Publisher's description Includes bibliographical references.
