Zusammenfassung: | "No scholarly consensus exists about how the terms 'memory' and 'collective memory' may most fruitfully inform historical study. Hence there is still much room for reflection and clarification in this branch of cultural history. How war has been remembered collectively is the central question in this volume. War in the twentieth century is a vivid and traumatic phenomenon which has left behind it survivors who engage time and time again in acts of remembrance. Thus this volume, which contains essays by outstanding scholars of twentieth-century history, focuses on the issues raised by the shadow of war in this century. Drawing on material from countries in Europe, and from Israel and the United States, the contributors have adopted a 'social agency' approach which highlights the behaviour, not of whole societies or of ruling groups alone, but of the individuals who do the work of remembrance, who feel they have a duty to remember, and who want to preserve a piece of the past."--Jacket |

Thus this volume, which contains essays by outstanding scholars of twentieth-century history, focuses on the issues raised by the shadow of war in this century. Drawing on material from countries in Europe, and from Israel and the United States, the contributors have adopted a 'social agency' approach which highlights the behaviour, not of whole societies or of ruling groups alone, but of the individuals who do the work of remembrance, who feel they have a duty to remember, and who want to preserve a piece of the past."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">History, Modern</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061241</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Memory.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85083497</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">War and society.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85145155</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Civilization, Modern</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85026473</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Memory</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D008568</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mémoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Guerre et société.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Civilisation</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">memory (psychological concept)</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">World.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Civilization, Modern</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History, Modern</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Memory</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">War and society</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Oorlogen.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Maatschappij.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Herdenkingen.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Collectief geheugen.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Histoire universelle</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield><subfield code="2">ram</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Civilisation</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield><subfield code="2">ram</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Commémoration.</subfield><subfield code="2">ram</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mémoire.</subfield><subfield code="2">ram</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Guerre</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield><subfield code="2">ram</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Guerres</subfield><subfield code="x">Sociologie</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield><subfield code="2">ram</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mémoire collective.</subfield><subfield code="2">ram</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Guerre</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social.</subfield><subfield code="2">ram</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Winter, J. "No scholarly consensus exists about how the terms 'memory' and 'collective memory' may most fruitfully inform historical study. Drawing on material from countries in Europe, and from Israel and the United States, the contributors have adopted a 'social agency' approach which highlights the behaviour, not of whole societies or of ruling groups alone, but of the individuals who do the work of remembrance, who feel they have a duty to remember, and who want to preserve a piece of the past."--Jacket Print version record.
