Zusammenfassung: | Ask most people to imagine a philosopher and they probably think of someone like Socrates--absent-minded, perhaps, but with a sharp intellect and a thirst for the truth. A woman juggling car pools and housework is not the first image that springs to mind, but women have taken huge steps in the philosophy profession over the past 50 years. Still, to this day, well-established women philosophers continue to face sexism from colleagues and students. Singing in the Fire is a unique, groundbreaking collection of autobiographical essays by leading women in philosophy. It mines the experience of the generation that witnessed, and helped create, the remarkable advances now evident for women in the field. These women are leaders and innovators, looking back on how they have been treated, how they might have done things differently, and how we might make progress in future generations. |

Singing in the Fire is a unique, groundbreaking collection of autobiographical essays by leading women in philosophy. It mines the experience of the generation that witnessed, and helped create, the remarkable advances now evident for women in the field. These women are leaders and innovators, looking back on how they have been treated, how they might have done things differently, and how we might make progress in future generations.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Women philosophers.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85147672</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Philosophy, Modern.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85100960</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Femmes philosophes.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">philosophers.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Philosophy, Modern</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Women philosophers</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Alcoff, Linda Martín,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Bartky, Sandra Lee,</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJjMvt8qvHfWMXRTj3Qwmd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n90606741</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Brennan, Teresa,</subfield><subfield code="d">1952-2003,</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJrwXGhF3YYqhy7K64BdcP</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88091479</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Card, Claudia,</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJycM8DDdrKJ4mhhm8pQMP</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n90609752</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Held, Virginia,</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJdwYFRvHGDvD4KCkw97HC</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79139751</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Jaggar, Alison M.,</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJrKT4VbT7QMJpMCghwwG3</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n83060619</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Lewis, Stephanie,</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjBcjDWJMWYQxxjtfV4MGd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88297264</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Narayan, Uma,</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJfMfdJBG6qMykFFXKPCwC</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n97014753</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Nussbaum, Martha C.</subfield><subfield code="q">(Martha Craven),</subfield><subfield code="d">1947-</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJvxvGDXgCBVM3wfQ6mrv3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Nye, Andrea,</subfield><subfield code="d">1939-</subfield><subfield code="e">contributor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJqQxBmTPTPv9QCfxkM9Dq</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n87839180</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Shrader-Frechette, K. Lanham, Maryland : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, ©2003. 1 online resource (162 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references at some chapter ends. A life sentence in Bohemia / Sandra Lee Bartky -- My open agenda, or how not to make the right career moves / Teresa Brennan -- Finding my voice / Claudia Card -- Taking oneself seriously, but not too / Virginia Held -- Freethinking? / Alison M. Jaggar -- Etc. / Stephanie R. Lewis -- What's a brown girl like you doing in the ivory tower? / Uma Narayan -- "Don't smile so much" / Martha C. Nussbaum -- At the feet of Mrs. Ramsay / Andrea Nye -- Philosophy and life / Ofelia Schutte -- Autobiography of a whistle-blower / Kristin Shrader-Frechette -- Getting here from there / Karen J. Warren. Ask most people to imagine a philosopher and they probably think of someone like Socrates--absent-minded, perhaps, but with a sharp intellect and a thirst for the truth.
