Zusammenfassung: | Contemporary social and political theory has reached an impasse about a problem that had once seemed straightforward: how can individuals make ethical judgments about power and politics? Crisis of Authority analyzes the practices that bind authority, trust and truthfulness in contemporary theory and politics. Drawing on newly available archival materials, Nancy Luxon locates two models for such practices in Sigmund Freud's writings on psychoanalytic technique and Michel Foucault's unpublished lectures on the ancient ethical practices of 'fearless speech', or parrhesia. Luxon argues that the dynamics provoked by the figures of psychoanalyst and truth-teller are central to this process. Her account offers a more supple understanding of the modern ethical subject and new insights into political authority and authorship. |

Her account offers a more supple understanding of the modern ethical subject and new insights into political authority and authorship.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Freud, Sigmund,</subfield><subfield code="d">1856-1939.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Foucault, Michel,</subfield><subfield code="d">1926-1984.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foucault, Michel,</subfield><subfield code="d">1926-1984</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJwHjyPd7fJmykthGvkkXd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Freud, Sigmund,</subfield><subfield code="d">1856-1939</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJc868dQ6vRkyktcKcT8md</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Freud, Sigmund</subfield><subfield code="d">1856-1939</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foucault, Michel</subfield><subfield code="d">1926-1984</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Authority.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85009789</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Power (Social sciences)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85105976</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Autorité.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Pouvoir (Sciences sociales)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Authority</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Power (Social sciences)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Autorität</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4003990-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Vertrauen</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4063290-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politische Theorie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4046563-9</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic book.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Luxon, Nancy.</subfield><subfield code="t">Crisis of authority</subfield><subfield code="z">9781107038738</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2012049270</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)825196436</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=622080</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">crisisofauthorit0000luxo</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH26385977</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Authority and its discontents -- Risk and resistance -- Conversations with the unknown -- What is an author(ity)? -- The authorial subject -- Audiences and the proliferation of meaning -- Breaking the frame, composing the event -- Conclusion. Contemporary social and political theory has reached an impasse about a problem that had once seemed straightforward: how can individuals make ethical judgments about power and politics? Crisis of Authority analyzes the practices that bind authority, trust and truthfulness in contemporary theory and politics. Drawing on newly available archival materials, Nancy Luxon locates two models for such practices in Sigmund Freud's writings on psychoanalytic technique and Michel Foucault's unpublished lectures on the ancient ethical practices of 'fearless speech', or parrhesia. Luxon argues that the dynamics provoked by the figures of psychoanalyst and truth-teller are central to this process.
