Zusammenfassung: | "The Poetics of Eros in Ancient Greece offers the first comprehensive inquiry into the deity of sexual love, a power that permeated daily Greek life. Claude Calame uses an anthropological and linguistic approach to re-create indigenous categories of erotic love. He maintains that Eros, the joyful companion of Aphrodite, was a divine figure around which poets constructed a physiology of desire that functioned in specific ways within a network of social relations. Calame begins by showing how poetry and iconography gave a rich variety of expression to the concept of Eros, then delivers a history of the deity's roles within social and political institutions, and concludes with a discussion of an Eros-centered metaphysics. Calame's treatment of archaic and classical Greek institutions reveals Eros at work in initiation rites and celebrations, educational practices, the Dionysiac theater of tragedy and comedy, and in real and imagined spatial settings. For men, Eros functioned particularly in the symposium and the gymnasium, places where men and boys interacted and where future citizens were educated. The household was the setting where girls, brides, and adult wives learned their erotic roles--as such it provides the context for understanding female rites of passage and the problematics of sexuality in conjugal relations. Through analyses of both Greek language and practices, Calame offers a fresh, subtle reading of relations between individuals as well as a quick-paced and fascinating overview of Eros in Greek society at large"--Provided by publisher |

Greece offers the first comprehensive inquiry into the deity of sexual love, a power that permeated daily Greek life. Through analyses of both Greek language and practices, Calame offers a fresh, subtle reading of relations between individuals as well as a quick-paced and fascinating overview of Eros in Greek society at large"--Provided by publisher</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Eros,</subfield><subfield code="c">Gott</subfield><subfield code="z">Griechenland <Altertum></subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Erotic poetry, Greek</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Literature and society</subfield><subfield code="z">Greece.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Poetics</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">To 1500.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Sex in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85120618</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Poésie érotique grecque</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire et critique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Littérature et société</subfield><subfield code="z">Grèce.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Sexualité dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LITERARY CRITICISM</subfield><subfield code="x">Ancient & Classical.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Erotic poetry, Greek</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Literature and society</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Poetics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sex in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Greece</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJxd6hw8HtWYq9JY6hjjYP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Eros (god)</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Letterkunde.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Erotiek.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Griekse oudheid.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Griechenland <Altertum></subfield><subfield code="x">Eros (Gott)</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">To 1500</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Lloyd, Janet,</subfield><subfield code="d">1934-</subfield><subfield code="e">translator.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjFP78tGRcmY9Y77wrdD9C</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2012125606</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The poetics of eros in Ancient Greece (Work)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFH9WHtrrkKJF3p8T7q38K</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Calame, Claude.</subfield><subfield code="s">Greci e l'eros. "The Poetics of Eros in Ancient Greece offers the first comprehensive inquiry into the deity of sexual love, a power that permeated daily Greek life.
