Zusammenfassung: | An introduction to a Balkan folk music that also thrives in communities throughout Europe, the Americas, and Australia. Tamburitza features acoustic stringed instruments, ranging in size from tamburas as small as a ukulele to ones as large as a bass viol. The author, a folklorist, documents the centuries-old origins and development of the tradition, including its intertwining with nationalist and ethnic symbolism. The music survived the complex politics of nineteenth-century Europe but remains a point of contention today. In Croatia, tamburitza is strongly associated with national identity and supported by an artistic and educational infrastructure. Serbia is proud of its outstanding performers and composers who have influenced tamburitza bands on four continents. In the United States, tamburitza was brought by Balkan immigrants in the nineteenth century and has become a flourishing American ethnic music with its own set of representational politics. Combining historical research with in-depth interviews and extensive participant-observer description, this book reveals a dynamic and expressive music tradition on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond, illuminating the cultures and societies from which it has emerged. -- Back cover. |

-- Back cover.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Fretted lute)</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Fretted lute)</subfield><subfield code="z">Balkan Peninsula.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Fretted lute)</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Fretted lute) music</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Folk music</subfield><subfield code="z">Balkan Peninsula</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Folk music</subfield><subfield code="z">Middle West</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Luth balkanais)</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Luth balkanais)</subfield><subfield code="z">Balkans.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Luth balkanais)</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">MUSIC</subfield><subfield code="x">Musical Instruments</subfield><subfield code="x">Strings.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Folk music</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Fretted lute)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Tambura (Fretted lute) music</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Balkan Peninsula</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJhRJcwDhTXyG8xgjt9JjC</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Middle West</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">March, Richard, 1946-</subfield><subfield code="t">Tamburitza tradition</subfield><subfield code="z">9780299296049</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2013015067</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)841187587</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Languages and folklore of the Upper Midwest.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2012126033</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=642390</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - An introduction to a Balkan folk music that also thrives in communities throughout Europe, the Americas, and Australia.
