Zusammenfassung: | In the 1960s, policymakers and mental health experts joined forces to participate in President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty. In this interdisciplinary history, a physician and historian examines the interplay between psychiatric theory and social policy throughout that decade, ending with President Richard Nixon's 1971 veto of a bill that would have provided universal day care. The author shows that this cooperation between mental health professionals and policymakers was based on an understanding of what poor men, women, and children lacked. This perception was rooted in psychiatric theories of deprivation focused on two overlapping sections of American society: the poor had less, and African Americans, disproportionately represented among America's poor, were seen as having practically nothing. The author analyzes the political and cultural context that led child mental health experts, educators, and policymakers to embrace this deprivation-based theory and its translation into liberal social policy. Deprivation theory, she shows, continues to haunt social policy today, profoundly shaping how both health professionals and educators view children from low-income and culturally and linguistically diverse homes. -- Provided by publisher. |

health experts joined forces to participate in President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty. -- Provided by publisher.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Social policy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140547</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Poor</subfield><subfield code="x">Government policy</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Poor</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004009391</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Poverty</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Deprivation (Psychology)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85037060</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Poverty</subfield><subfield code="x">psychology</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Poverty</subfield><subfield code="x">history</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">history</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">History, 20th Century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Cultural Deprivation</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Black or African American</subfield><subfield code="x">history</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique sociale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Pauvres</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique gouvernementale</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Pauvreté</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect psychologique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Privation (Psychologie)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Médecine</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Social Security.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Social Services & Welfare.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">MEDICAL</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychiatry</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Deprivation (Psychology)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Poor</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Poor</subfield><subfield code="x">Government policy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Poverty</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Social policy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">What's wrong with the poor? A mother's touch? : from deprivation to day care -- Cultural deprivation? : race, deprivation, and the nature-nurture debate -- Targeting deprivation : early enrichment and community action -- Deprivation and intellectual disability : from "mild mental retardation" to resegregation -- Environmental psychology and the race riots. In the 1960s, policymakers and mental health experts joined forces to participate in President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty.
