Zusammenfassung: | Post-war culture and society and the Edinburgh Festivals The Edinburgh Festival is the world's largest arts festival. It has also been the site of numerous 'culture wars' since it began in 1947. Key debates that took place across the western world about the place of culture in society, the practice and significance of the arts, censorship, the role of organised religion, and meanings of morality were all reflected in contest over culture in the Festival City. The Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama sought to use culture to bolster European civilisation, for which it was considered for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. The Church saw culture as a 'weapon of enlightenment', the labour movement as a 'weapon in the struggle', and the new generation of artistic entrepreneurs who came to the fore in the 1960s as a means of challenge and provocation, resulting in high profile controversies like the nudity trial of 1963 and the furore over a play about bestiality in 1967. These ideas - conservative and liberal, elite and diverse, traditional and avant-garde - all clashed every August in Edinburgh, making the Festival City an effective lens for exploring major changes in culture and society in post-war Britain. This book explores the 'culture wars' of 1945-1970 and is the first major study of the origins and development of this leading annual arts extravaganza. Key Features:. First critical history of the first twenty five years of the world's biggest arts festival Uses festivals (and key theatre ventures) in Edinburgh as a lens for understanding wider social and cultural change in post-war Britain Acts as a practical exercise in the application of cultural criticism by combining social and cultural history with insights from cultural studies and contemporary festivals and events literature Draws upon a range of archival sources, including original oral history interviews with key players in the arts scene of Edinburgh and beyond Provides a valuable addition to the history of the arts in British society in the period c. 1945-1971, and to our understanding of cultural and social change in post-war Britain |

1945-1971, and to our understanding of cultural and social change in post-war Britain</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="506" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Access restricted to Kwantlen Polytechnic University students, faculty and staff.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="611" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Edinburgh International Festival</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="611" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Edinburgh International Festival</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Performing arts festivals</subfield><subfield code="z">Scotland</subfield><subfield code="z">Edinburgh.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Social change</subfield><subfield code="z">Great Britain</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Festivals d'arts du spectacle</subfield><subfield code="z">Écosse</subfield><subfield code="z">Édimbourg.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">Performance.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">Reference.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PERFORMING ARTS</subfield><subfield code="x">Film & Video</subfield><subfield code="x">History & Criticism.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Performing arts festivals</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Social change</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Great Britain</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJdmp7p3cx8hpmJ8HvmTpP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Scotland</subfield><subfield code="z">Edinburgh</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJt8kwmMFGyb3pfx96VXBP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The Edinburgh festivals (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGWDXGqgBpvV6ChwvR8mYd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Bartie, Angela.</subfield><subfield code="t">Edinburgh festivals.</subfield><subfield code="d">Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press, 2013</subfield><subfield code="z">9780748670307</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)823896784</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=603157</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">25765563</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL -
