Zusammenfassung:The People's Republic of China (PRC) has become, after the United States, the world's most important country because of its enormous population, growing economic and military power, and newly assertive foreign policies. Whereas during the Cold War, China was largely isolated and alienated from world politics, the PRC has become a major global security actor. Today, no major security issue, in any region, can be decided without considering Beijing's position. China's influence in Africa, Latin America, and other regions has been expanding along with the PRC's power in Asia. China is following the path of earlier rising economic powers such as Great Britain and the United States in converting its economic potential into military strength. Beijing is also developing increasingly powerful military tools, ranging from nuclear weapons to innovative cyber and space strike weapons. Despite these growing economic and military powers, China has not engaged in a major war since 1953. Western leaders still hope that China will become a responsible global stakeholder and uphold existing international security arrangements. This volume in the Global security watch series reviews the foreign and defense policies of China, with emphasis on developments since the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident. It provides a comprehensive but relatively short and accessible text for students, journalists, and policy makers eager to better understand the implications of China's ascending trajectory.
