Zusammenfassung: | "Prying Open Fortress Europe: The Turn to Sectoral Labor Migration is unique in the field of migration studies because it traces the microeconomic motivations of the relevant economic actors who influence labor migration policy. This book updates the study ofthe political economy of immigration through a focus on the central and proactive role of employers, exploring how they interact with trade unions and government to reconfigure the labor migration paradigm in Western Europe. By doing so, this book is attentive to the logic behind their strategies, being sensitive to macroeconomic changes that produce sectorally variant policy outcomes. Beyond offering a microeconomically informed explanation for immigration policy, the study transcends the field of migration studies by offering insights relevant to larger debates concerning the nature of national varieties of capitalism. Challenging the "national models" understanding of capitalism through a multicountry, multisectoral study of employers' policy preferences, it demonstrates how in the area of labor migration, economic branches evidence different worker flexibility needs that lead to differing policy results within countries yet similar responses in the same industries of different countries." "Although this book's case studies examine policy development and the role of German, British, Austrian, and Dutch employers, the central comparison is between Germany, with its highly regulated economy, and the more laissez-faire United Kingdom. It analyzes labor migration policy with four concentrations - IT, hospitality, construction, and metalwork - in order to illustrate the impact of differing worker flexibility requirements upon employer calculations."--Jacket |

It analyzes labor migration policy with four concentrations - IT, hospitality, construction, and metalwork - in order to illustrate the impact of differing worker flexibility requirements upon employer calculations."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">Emigration and immigration.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">Émigration et immigration.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Travailleurs étrangers</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Labor.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Labor & Industrial Relations.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Emigration and immigration</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Europe</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJxCxPbbk4CPJDQJb4r6rq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mitgliedsstaaten</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4170174-4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ausländischer Arbeitnehmer</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4003743-5</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Einwanderungspolitik</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Europäische Union.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Prying open fortress Europe (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGy4bFvfBDfqCFqqYxkdQq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Prying open fortress Europe.</subfield><subfield code="d">Lanham : Lexington Books, ©2010</subfield><subfield code="z">9780739133194</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2009036002</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=588512</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10717380</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">588512</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">cis25592471</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">10745547</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">pryingopenfortre0000cavi</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

New Paradigm for Labor Migration -- Flexibility at the Origin of Employer Preferences -- Germany: A Tug of War between Employers and Domestic Institutions -- United Kingdom: Employer Dominance or Revitalized Corporatism? -- Austria and the Netherlands: Corporatist Birds of a Feather? -- European Labor Migration: Quo vadis? "Prying Open Fortress Europe: The Turn to Sectoral Labor Migration is unique in the field of migration studies because it traces the microeconomic motivations of the relevant economic actors who influence labor migration policy. Challenging the "national models" understanding of capitalism through a multicountry, multisectoral study of employers' policy preferences, it demonstrates how in the area of labor migration, economic branches evidence different worker flexibility needs that lead to differing policy results within countries yet similar responses in the same industries of different countries."
