Zusammenfassung: | This book investigates the ways in which contemporary queer fictions offer insight on environmental issues through their performance of a specifically queer understanding of nature, the nonhuman, and environmental degradation. This book reveals a tradition of queer environmentalism in contemporary literature and film from the Americas. In the process, it challenges the historical disconnect between queer theory and ecocriticism - a disconnect that, as the author shows, emerges from those disciplines' divergent attitudes toward "nature." The author investigates the ways in which contemporary queer fictions offer insight on environmental issues through their performance of a specifically queer understanding of nature, the nonhuman, and environmental degradation. By drawing upon queer theory and ecocriticism, the author examines how contemporary queer fictions extend their critique of "natural" categories of gender and sexuality to the nonhuman natural world, thus constructing a queer environmentalism. The author's analyses of works such as Leslie Feinberg's Stone Butch Blues, Todd Haynes's Safe, and Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain illustrate how homophobia, classism, racism, sexism, and xenophobia inform dominant views of the environment and help to justify its exploitation. Calling for a queer environmental ethics, the author delineates the discourses that have worked to prevent such an ethics and argues for a concept of queerness that is attuned to environmentalism's urgent futurity, and an environmentalism that is attuned to queer sensibilities. -- Publisher's description. |

-- Publisher's description.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Homosexuality</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Human ecology</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Human ecology</subfield><subfield code="x">Study and teaching.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85062861</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Philosophy of nature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85101004</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Homosexualité</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Écologie humaine</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Écologie humaine</subfield><subfield code="x">Étude et enseignement.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Philosophie de la nature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Gay Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Gender Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Homosexuality</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Human ecology</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Human ecology</subfield><subfield code="x">Study and teaching</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Philosophy of nature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Homosexualität</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Queer-Theorie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/7628620-4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ecocriticism</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Strange natures (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGt6Dy9P4MkcRHmWB89p8C</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Strange natures</subfield><subfield code="d">Urbana : University of Illinois Press, c2013.</subfield><subfield code="z">9780252037627 (cloth : alk. paper)</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2012040771</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=571626</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">10680513</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse25249</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">cis25344874</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">571626</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10689973</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - This book investigates the ways in which contemporary queer fictions offer insight on environmental issues through their performance of a specifically queer understanding of nature, the nonhuman, and environmental degradation. This book reveals a tradition of queer environmentalism in contemporary literature and film from the Americas. In the process, it challenges the historical disconnect between queer theory and ecocriticism - a disconnect that, as the author shows, emerges from those disciplines' divergent attitudes toward "nature."
