Zusammenfassung: | "Found in a manuscript of Anglo-Saxon verse known as Junius 11, the biblical poems Genesis, Exodus, Daniel, and Christ and Satan have fascinated scholars for centuries. The manuscript, published by its owner Franciscus Junius in 1655, was the first codex of Old English poetry to appear in print. Written sometime around 1000, these works were originally attributed by Junius to the poet Caedmon, but they are now generally believed to be the work of several authors. However, the selection and arrangement of the texts continue to pose questions about their meaning, source, authorship, and audience that challenge our efforts to understand the manuscript as a whole and the individual poems themselves." "In this volume, R.M. Liuzza has brought together a collection of essays that analyze the Junius poems from a variety of theological, rhetorical, cultural, textual, and literary perspectives. The contributors illuminate the Junius poems as treasuries of Anglo-Saxon religious lore, rich fusions of sources and influences, and complex sites of the acculturation of Christianity in the Germanic world. Together, the essays illuminate the challenges of these intriguing poems and enrich our understanding of their literary significance, their unique material context, and the hybrid culture that produced them."--Jacket |

Together, the essays illuminate the challenges of these intriguing poems and enrich our understanding of their literary significance, their unique material context, and the hybrid culture that produced them."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="630" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Caedmon manuscript.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80089305</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="630" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Caedmon manuscript</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="630" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Caedmon manuscript</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4301326-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">English poetry</subfield><subfield code="y">Old English, ca. 450-1100</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Christian poetry, English (Old)</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Manuscripts, Medieval</subfield><subfield code="z">England.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Manuscripts, English (Old)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87000823</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Poésie anglaise</subfield><subfield code="y">ca 450-1100 (Vieil anglais)</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire et critique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Poésie chrétienne anglaise (vieil anglais)</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire et critique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Manuscrits médiévaux</subfield><subfield code="z">Angleterre.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Manuscrits anglais (vieil anglais)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LITERARY CRITICISM</subfield><subfield code="x">European</subfield><subfield code="x">English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Christian poetry, English (Old)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">English poetry</subfield><subfield code="x">Old English</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Manuscripts, English (Old)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Manuscripts, Medieval</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">England</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJpYDdYvBpjXV6WpybK68C</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Aufsatzsammlung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Gedichten.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Oudengels.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Engelse handschriften.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">450-1100</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Liuzza, R. Print version record. "Found in a manuscript of Anglo-Saxon verse known as Junius 11, the biblical poems Genesis, Exodus, Daniel, and Christ and Satan have fascinated scholars for centuries. Together, the essays illuminate the challenges of these intriguing poems and enrich our understanding of their literary significance, their unique material context, and the hybrid culture that produced them."--Jacket English.
