Zusammenfassung: | Patterns of relative clause formation tend to vary according to the typological properties of a language. Highly polysynthetic languages tend to have fully nominalized relative clauses and no relative pronouns, while other typologically diverse languages tend to have relative clauses which are similar to main or independent clauses. Languages of the Americas, with their rich genetic diversity, have all been under the influence of European languages, whether Spanish, English or Portuguese, a situation that may be expected to have influenced their grammatical patterns. The present volume focuses on two tasks: The first deals with the discussion of functional principles related to relative clause formation: diachrony and paths of grammaticalization, simplicity vs. complexity, and formalization of rules to capture semantic-syntactic correlations. The second provides a typological overview of relative clauses in nine different languages going from north to south in the Americas. |

The second provides a typological overview of relative clauses in nine different languages going from north to south in the Americas.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Grammar, Comparative and general</subfield><subfield code="x">Relative clauses.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056327</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Complexity (Linguistics)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004005913</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">America</subfield><subfield code="x">Languages</subfield><subfield code="x">Research</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Relatives.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Complexité (Linguistique)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Amérique</subfield><subfield code="x">Langues</subfield><subfield code="x">Recherche</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDY</subfield><subfield code="x">Native American Languages.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Complexity (Linguistics)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Grammar, Comparative and general</subfield><subfield code="x">Relative clauses</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Language and languages</subfield><subfield code="x">Research</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">America</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nordamerikanska språk.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Komparativa satser.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Comrie, Bernard,</subfield><subfield code="d">1947-</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJcBVv7rbJyPdKdbFPPvpP</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79117980</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Estrada Fernández, Zarina,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n94075706</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="z">9781283594349</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2012022781</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Typological studies in language.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=481005</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH28555925</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">24020515</subfield><subfield code="c">99.00 GBP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL1013048</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10595297</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">481005</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">9618463</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Relative clauses in Yucatec Maya: Light heads vs. Null domain (by Gutierrez-Bravo, Rodrigo), p253-268; 18. Questionable relatives (by Mithun, Marianne), p269-300. Patterns of relative clause formation tend to vary according to the typological properties of a language.
